going to come and fight. >> it's a it's a no brainer, right? you've got to you've got a cup competition. david versus goliath with the first match between the two professional teams in the bay area, i mean, i yeah, it sells itself. >> kickoff is at 7 p.m. reporting from san jose i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> people don't obey the lights. they're always rushing to work. and there's always a lot of kids around here because they go to school. >> now at five. >> a cyclist is killed in a grisly crash that shuts down a major san jose intersection for hours. why? neighbors say this is a known problem area in a city struggling to address traffic deaths. >> also, a hit and run suspect fleeing from san francisco police officers hits a 14 year old girl as she's walking to school and a new wave of protests erupts at uc berkeley and across the country, calling on israel to call off its invasion of rafah. >> ktvu fox two news at five

starts now. >> good evening. i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. >> we begin with some dangerous driving in the bay area's two most populated cities. >> in san jose, a cyclist was killed in a crash that shut down a major thoroughfare for hours. the suspect is now in custody and facing multiple charges. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary joins us now. he's at the intersection of east capitol expressway and center road with the latest. jesse, what can you tell us? >> julie, good evening to you. and just within the past few minutes, san jose police telling us that suspect you mentioned was arrested with a weapon. he was tackled to the ground by bystanders until police could come and put the handcuffs on him. the intersection that was closed reopened around 130 this morning. this after a chaotic and congested morning following a collision that cost a cyclist his life. reporter from sky fox, the mess littering the intersection of east capitol expressway and center road speaks to a collision and death.

san jose police say was preventable. >> every collision is preventable, right? that's why they called them accidents. but it's not really an action. there's some type of vehicle code that was violated that if not violated, then the action would have occurred. >> investigators say around 730 tuesday morning, the driver of this red pickup truck was moving at a high rate of speed westbound on capital expressway. he ran a red light and collided first with a cyclist and then with the driver of this white pickup truck, both of whom had a green light northbound on center road. the collision killed the cyclist and strewn debris across the intersection, shutting down traffic in all directions for hours. >> the bus did not, pick up my great grandson from school on time. she was like ten minutes late and she said it was a problem on capital and center. and after that i seen that, the traffic was all backing up. they were walking the street. >> neighbor esther barron says this intersection is dangerous because drivers don't always stop for red lights. that, coupled with the three lanes of traffic in each direction on both capital and center and the

turning lanes brings a large volume of vehicles to one point, sometimes at high speeds. >> they're always rushing to work and there's always a lot of kids around here because they go to school, police say the driver of the red pickup truck was arrested after the crash, and is facing multiple charges. >> the driver of the white pickup truck suffered non-life threatening injuries. the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. >> i think everybody just needs to be aware. i think, road safety is everyone's responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right? i'm not sure that there's a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here, if you're following the rules of the road, somebody wasn't. and unfortunately, that's what occurred. >> the name of the cyclist will be released by the santa clara county medical examiner once his family is notified. police say this is the 17th fatal collision of the year so far here in san jose. and city officials say while this is not the number one intersection for collisions, it is among the top intersections for collisions. we're live in the seven trees section of san

jose this evening. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. julie, back up to you. >> all right jesse, thank you. >> and tonight in san francisco, a man is in custody after police say he hit two people with his car in two separate incidents. one of the victims, a 14 year old girl who was walking to school. ktvu christian captain live tonight there at market and jones in the city where the story began with the car hitting a man and then taking off. christian. >> yeah, mike, we have been following this crazy story since this morning. if you take a look, here we are at the intersection of market and jones . and if you look carefully, you can see some of the burnout left possibly by that incident here this morning. it all began here when that driver hit an urban alchemy worker. police say that that same driver then went on to hit a 14 year old girl near her school. a wild chase and two hit and runs ended with a collision here at embarcadero and green street in san francisco. but police say the story started here at the intersection of jones and market. at around 7:50 a.m. police say a driver in a white mustang was spinning

donuts in this intersection and collided with a worker from urban alchemy, then sped away. police responded to the area and say the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. investigators also say that a witness was able to provide detailed information about the white mustang, including a license plate number. >> later on, at approximately 920, officers observed the suspect vehicle continuing, continuing to drive recklessly and committing multiple vehicle violations. >> police say those officers tried to pull over the mustang, but instead of stopping, the driver sped off with officers in pursuit. that pursuit led to francisco middle school, where the driver of the mustang hit a 14 year old girl crossing in the crosswalk. the pursuing officers stopped to help that girl. she, too, was taken to the hospital with what we're hearing were non-life threatening injuries. san francisco unified schools released a statement reading in part, quote this morning, a francisco middle school student was struck by a car while walking in the crosswalk on

their way to class. at around 9:30 a.m, the student was in stable condition and with their family. officers say continuing to pursue the mustang was too dangerous. the driver too erratic and too careless. >> it's based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian, and continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian. he posed a risk to the public. >> officers say the suspect ultimately crashed at embarcadero and green, about three quarters of a mile from where he struck that 14 year old girl. officers say they were then able to arrest him. investigators say he, too, was transported to the hospital with injuries. they say were not related to the multiple crashes in which they say he was involved. in. at this point, investigators aren't releasing the name of that driver or saying where he's from. they say multiple felony charges are pending. live in san francisco, christien kafton ktvu fox two

news. >> all right, christian, thank you for that. a fire blew right through an apartment building in oakland this afternoon. it was first reported at 130 at the corner of sixth avenue and east eighth street. dozens of firefighters responded. they were able to get this one under control in just about 90 minutes. the flames spread to a nearby single family home, both buildings suffering significant damage, no injuries reported and no word how many people have been displaced. the cause is not yet known. >> new at five tonight, the alameda county da's office said that holding people accountable is its highest priority as it released its annual report today. da pamela price said in her first year in office, prosecutors saw a slight rise in the number of reports from local law enforcement. at just under 12,000. about 63% of those resulted in a case being filed. the office said they are working to provide data on specific charges and outcomes, but price said that cases resolved through the alameda county narcotics task force rose from 66 in 20 22

to 80 7 in 2023. >> we know that this is an important moment for the residents of alameda county who have just barely begun to see the work that we are doing and that we will continue to do to protect public safety. >> price also touted a new organized retail theft team that started in 2023 with a $2 million grant from the governor. this report comes as the district attorney is facing a recall fueled by claims that the office is not pursuing maximum charges in cases of violent crime happening now, new protests in some major cities across the country calling on the israeli government not to move forward with its invasion of rafah. >> tonight, sky fox was overhead. one of those rallies in uc berkeley, sproul plaza, the demonstration involving a few hundred people here, as you can see, began just around 4:00 this afternoon. no word on how long it's going to continue. israel is under more scrutiny from protesters across the country after rejecting a cease fire deal that hamas had

accepted. the israeli government said the proposal did not meet its demands. >> today, university of chicago police began clearing a pro-palestinian encampment at the school's hyde park campus. so far, there have been no reports of injuries or arrests. tensions rose over the weekend between pro-palestinian supporters and counter-protests. others who have displayed israeli flags on the quad. officials say the protest had crossed a line and caused concerns concerns rather about safety. also, protests continue at george washington university. that's where students are preparing in case police come to arrest them. today they were seen practicing locking arms and dead waiting across the country. an estimated 2600 people have been arrested since these protests began last month. >> the white house is urging israel not to move forward with the rafah offensive. even so, president biden, doubling down on his support for israel and strongly condemning anti-semitism. fox's rebecca castro reports on the president's speech at a holocaust memorial ceremony, and how the us support for israel is

dividing many here in america. >> never again simply translated for me means never forget president biden vowing to never forget the 6 million jews killed during world war two, and those killed by hamas on october 7th during a holocaust day of remembrance ceremony on capitol hill. >> the president also took aim at protests popping up on college campuses around the country, some of which have featured hateful rhetoric towards jews. >> there is no place on any campus in america, any place in america, for anti-semitism or hate speech. >> as israel's war with hamas continues, president biden reiterated his ironclad support for the jewish state even as its military moves into the city of rafah, something the president has tried to deter israel from doing. >> this appears to be a limited operation, but of course, it that much of that depends on what comes next. >> israel's actions in rafah and the president's support is also

causing divisions on capitol hill. and some democrats are calling on president biden to take a tougher stance. >> my great hope is that we that the united states and that the president does not allow this horrific tragedy to happen with us support. >> it appears that hamas has consolidated itself in that one section of rafah. this is an opportunity for israel to take out that infrastructure. as the israeli military continues its operation in rafah, delegations from israel and hamas are in egypt, continuing discussions on a proposed cease fire. >> but it's unclear if the two sides are close to an agreement in washington. rebecca kaster ktvu, fox two news. >> uc berkeley has reportedly opened a civil rights investigation into a confrontation between a law professor and a student. it happened last month during a dinner at the private home of dean erwin chemerinsky in an incident that went viral, cell phone video captured one of the students grabbing a microphone to speak in support of garza. that's when the dean's wife, law professor kathryn fiske, tried

to take the microphone away from that student who accused fiske of violating her first amendment rights. the council on american islamic relations issued a statement praising the university's decision to investigate the incident. tiktok is suing the us government over a law that would force the app's chinese owner to sell the company or face a ban here in the us, the lawsuit claims. >> the law, passed last month, violates the first amendment by effectively denying millions of americans access to an app they use to share their views. us lawmakers say they're concerned tiktok's parent company, bytedance, could share sensitive user data with the chinese government. in the last hour, we did speak with legal analyst and law professor jessica levinson about whether tiktok has a legitimate case. >> i think the first question is, what are we going to treat this as? is this truly a ban? because because what the us government has said is divest or it's a ban. and so the first question is, is that divestment a true choice? will a court say

of tents, temporary structures and encampments in san francisco last month 360. tents and structures were reported. that is, down from 609 that accounted last summer. important to note here the count does not reflect the actual homeless population. and people we spoke with in the city had mixed reactions to the new numbers. >> there was a lot last couple of months, i think reducing more less noticed, fewer tents. yes. >> i don't believe i feel like it increased. >> i would say it's just the same old, you know, the same amount of homelessness and issues that have always been here. >> the mayor's office credits the decline in the number of

tents on city streets to their outreach efforts. the city was also given more legal authority to clear tents in encampments. when the ninth circuit court of appeals said san francisco could compel people not to sleep or camp in public areas if they had them a shelter bed. city officials say 60% of the time people declined that offer after more than one year without a permanent police chief, oakland's new chief starts this weekend, mayor shengtao said. >> chief floyd mitchell's first official day on the job will be this saturday. a public swearing in ceremony will take place on another date, which has yet to be set. mayor tao tells us mitchell is already working with interim chief darren allison to go over procedures and the department's crime reduction strategies. >> of course, ceasefire is the strategy that we're operating off of. we know it works. you know, we have homicides that are down by 17. we want to continue that roadmap. and so with that being said, he's already being trained up in all of these different strategies. the first order is crime reduction. yeah >> the latest data shows crime

is down in oakland, 33% overall compared to 2023. but the mayor says more needs to be done this comes as the city is promoting positive aspects of the city through various types of media to fight the perception of high crime in oakland. >> the city of richmond is now considering a resolution which urges the state of california to replace pg and e as the state's main supplier of electricity. the richmond city council scheduled a vote tonight on this resolution. supporters of the resolution say they want a nonprofit called golden state energy to take over. prior to this vote, supporters say they will present research showing problems with pg and e, including the impacts of pg and e fueled wildfires and utility shutoffs, and increasing electricity rates. >> as more and more people return to work, the commute becomes ever more unbearable, especially in the more remote suburbs. ktvu is tom vacar shows us a homegrown solution that will soon be under construction in contra costa county.

>> thank you. >> at san ramon's bishop ranch roadhouse tuesday, the ninth annual redefining mobility summit showed off what it calls the autonomous vehicle of the future and the star of the show. the glide aways, glide car, part of a scalable, expandable mass transit system coming soon. >> this is something that you can actually see and feel and experience later in a few minutes. >> when fully completed, the system will be 28 miles long. the dedicated, narrow roadway system will stretch from antioch to oakley, with 56 boarding stations. >> the first phase is about four and a half to five miles, but connecting antioch bart station to brentwood. >> that first phase will open in three years, with 200 autonomous glide cars servicing points or stations, as they're called every few blocks along the dedicated concrete pathway. >> and so you can take a glide car in the future by walking

maybe five minutes, going to an access point, which is a station, a glide phase station. >> once at the pick up point, you use your app to hail a driverless glide car, much as you would an uber or lyft, a car dedicated to your trip and your trip only for a party of up to four or baggage or a bike. >> and it takes you to the antioch bart station without ever stopping. always a predictable journey. time >> because building this, even with a dedicated pathway, is very light construction. it can be done very quickly and it can be done far, far cheaper than dedicated rail systems. and in that sense it is superior. it's way, way cheaper than putting in railway tracks, even if it costs $1 billion a mile to build a 28 mile system, that's 28 billion. >> that's just math. our system is going to cost a fraction ten, 20% of that. >> another glide waste project is to set up a system to connect san jose airport to rail transit. tom vacar, ktvu, fox

two news reporter. >> that's interesting, isn't it? sort of interesting to see that kind of transportation up on the on the table as we go forward here, we're going to see temperatures warming. they did warm today. they came up a good 5 to 8 degrees. they're going to warm again tomorrow and the next day. and we could see temperatures by friday and saturday potentially. i mean they'll be just nudging it. but potentially into the low 90s. well low 90s 90 degree. we may go 8990 degrees inland valleys i think sacramento they'll pop 90 which would be their first 90 of the of the season, which would probably be mother's day. they could hit 90. the valley is going to get pretty warm and that seems hot. you know, as you look live outside. we've got some wind to talk about. the wind advisory, keeping the atmosphere pretty, pretty clean. just beautiful. there is a little bit of haze going on out there. the fog got scoured off of the coast because of the strong winds are coming around this high. the high pressure winds are going to continue, which will mean that they're going to start clocking more north northeast. and that heats us up. that also takes the fog and just pushes it away from the coast and that's what was

happening. a north wind just kind of slides it out. that's that's almost dew. that's like a north northwest. it'll kind of go more north north. it would be more north. i don't know how much east we're going to see, but either way, what i'm trying to fog's gone. fog is gone, high pressure stays. and we warm up 80s and low 90s in the central valley and our inland fringe areas could easily make it to 90 degrees, especially as we get into friday. so we'll see. and with that, of course, the wind advisory. that's the mechanism really. or the high is the mechanism. the wind advisory is the result of the high and that wind is going to be sinking. so it's going to be warming. and that's why temperatures will warm up. and again strong north winds, dry conditions a little. there's a little fire component there. not to not to freak you out. i don't think we'll see a fire advisory. but it's an interesting, pattern. i will see you back here. we'll do the full forecast, and we'll go looking for rain. >> all right, bill, thank you. the boy scouts of america is rebranding. the organization will now be known as scouting america. the change comes as the organization emerges from

film star stormy daniels took the stand. she described a sexual encounter with mr. trump and a deal to keep her quiet. fox news connor hansen has more now from new york. >> the woman at the center of former president donald trump's criminal hush money trial takes the stand. stormy daniels, questioned by the prosecution, provided her account of an alleged sexual affair with trump in 2006. at times, she went into explicit detail about their encounter, prompting challenges by the defense and causing judge juan merchan to strike some of her answers from the record. >> all of these details that we're learning about the pajamas , the back and forth, the kind of play by play in the hotel room. none of it has much legal relevance to the cases and to the charges that the d.a. is pursuing here. but they're going to be capturing headlines for days, daniels told the jury after trump announced his run for president.

palace today. it was boycotted by many western officials who dismissed russia's election as a sham. the 71 year old has been in charge for nearly a quarter century. his new term does not expire until the year 2030. putin's recent time in office has been marked by the war on ukraine and western sanctions that forced russia to turn to china, north korea and iran for support. today, a russian court announced it would hold american soldiers. staff sergeant gordon black in custody until at least july on theft charges. an army spokesperson says the 34 year old was detained last week during a personal trip, a trip he did not get clearance to take . >> he was someone that all of us could have called when we had a problem. so the fact that she's actually the 911 person answering the phone, it's perfect. it was a perfect job for her heartbreak and horror in the east bay. >> family members and the alameda county sheriff's office mourning the death of a911 dispatcher days before mother's

way to work. >> our crime reporter henry lee is here now after speaking with loved ones, henry, mike and julie. >> her family tells me she was a natural problem solver who liked to talk to people and always had a sympathetic ear. in other words, she was made to be a dispatcher. they say it was her job before it was her actual job . >> her voice, her laughter, her outlook. >> terry godinho sharing what she'll miss most about her daughter. antonette finau, an alameda county sheriff's dispatcher who was killed by a suspected drunk driver while on her way to work. manu finau says his granddaughter, 11 year old aliana, struggling with her loss just before mother's day. >> she's going through the motion of expecting texts, expecting her mom to call. >> the crash happened at east 14th street and 150th avenue in san leandro at about 1115 sunday night. finnell's honda civic was broadsided by an alleged drunk driver. the wreck happened just blocks from the sheriff's dispatch center. sheriff's

deputies got to the scene first. >> one of our deputies recognized right away it was one of her own. >> sheriff yesenia sanchez said finau, who was a single mother, was also a team player. >> antoinette got in her car, left her family and was ready to go to work. she was coming to work on an overtime shift after she had already completed a regular hours shift because she is that person. >> just last month, finau appeared in this video posted by the sheriff's office honoring dispatchers. >> knowing that when they call nine on one because they're having an emergency, and that i get to be the voice that makes sure that they get the assistance that they need. it's definitely rewarding and self fulfilling. at the end of the day, it's a blessing to be here. >> her family says finau, was the problem solver with the gift of gab a valuable asset for a dispatcher. >> she was someone that all of us could have called when we had problems. so the fact that she's actually the 911 person answering the phone, it's perfect. it was a perfect job for her. >> finau died at eden medical center in castro valley, where family and law enforcement paid

tribute as her flag draped casket was wheeled out of the hospital, a procession escorted her body to the coroner's bureau in oakland. the flag, now half staff at eden township sheriff's substation in san leandro. i've learned the suspect is 32 year old lynette davis. she was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and dui. the family says while they're heartbroken, they have no anger toward the suspect. >> it's hard to swallow that she's gone, but i wouldn't wish ill will on anybody. >> now. funds been set up to support fennell's family. you can find that information on our website ktvu.com. funeral arrangements are pending. finau was 37 years old. live in the newsroom henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, just a heartbreaking story, henry. thank you. an 11 year old girlasied days after she and three other children were hit by a suspected dui driver. the santa clara county sheriff's office says mahi katari of cupertino and three other children, ages four, seven and eigwe all on the sidewalk near foothill and

stevens creek boulevards when they were hit by the driver of a pickup truck on april 27th. katari died four days later. the other children were treated and releasedm the hospital. the driv,8 ye old adam wu of cupertino, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of narcotics. >> san jose's cinco de mayo celebrations over the weekend were largely successful, but police say there were still some problems. the department says it received more than 2100 calls from friday through sunday. while celebrations were taking place across the city, most of the disruptive behavior was not related to organized events. officers responded to several misdemeanors, felonies, reckless driving incidents, and illegal sideshows, one resulting in an officer being injured. >> we had officers who were getting bottles thrown at their vehicles and at them we had officers who had been assaulted. we had people driving drunk. we had one vehicle crashed into a patrol car that was doing a diversion and injured our officer. luckily it was only minor injuries, but that person was injured due to the alcohol

related crash. >> the police department says it made 17 felony arrests, 52 misdemeanor arrests, more than 150 traffic citations were issued and six guns were seized. >> a former state prison, correctional officer is now booked into jail, facing several felony charges, attorney general rob bonta announced today the arrest and the charges. the former guard worked at the solano state prison between 2020 and 2021, according to a grand jury indictment. during that time, he allegedly accepted thousands of dollars in cash payments to bring contraband into the prison. it allegedly included deadly weapons, cell phones, tobacco and alcohol. the guard is now being held at the sacramento county jail. a somber ceremony took place today to honor fallen california highway patrol officers. the annual ceremony was held at the chp academy in west sacramento. governor newsom and attorney general rob bonta were among those in attendance. since the chp was founded in 1929, a total of 232 officers have died in the

sticking around and it's going to kind of nudge a little bit as it nudges in. these isobars will turn and the winds will come more offshore. and that's why we're calling for a warm up. it's also why we got a wind advisory that will go into effect because as those winds turn south, the central valley topography lays out. there's the west slope of the sierra nevada, there's the coastal range, and it's all the way down, right, all the way down. so the winds get funneled in that and there's a funneling. they not only are they coming down and being compressed, right, because they get funneled, because they hit the topography, but they also accelerate when they get funneled like that. there's kind of a venturi effect that goes on when they get sped up. so that is going to be tonight, late into wednesday into thursday morning for the central valley, mainly for us. it's going to be about warming up. we'll see temperatures potentially into the upper 80s, certainly, and then maybe a couple 90s, couple 90 degree readings potentially, especially for our inland spots. but most of us will be warm, it'll be noticeable and sacramento valley will get some 90s and their first 90s of the year. and if you haven't experienced, you know, we haven't really had any 90s. so when you get them, it does. it's normal in the summer, but this
