really down there by train tracks. >> shutting down the street during school hours after reports of several shootings near the campus. >> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. and thanks so much for joining us 10. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. our top story tonight. hundreds gathering at u c berkeley for a pro-palestine rally. students have been camping out there for the past couple of weeks. >> and as our kron four's, sara stinson reports tonight, the encampment keeps growing. >> cal berkeley students held an emergency rally in support of palestinians in rafah. they remain camping on campus. they say they'll continue to do so as well as hold these rallies until there's a students and community members packed in this prop plaza at u c berkeley for a pro-palestine

rally tuesday. protesters say they want to spread awareness about what they say is happening to palestinians as the israel-hamas war continues. we in the as they israel was bombing civilians and rhonda and is closing out of the border with egypt. they're not letting humanitarian aid. and so as the situation gets more imperative, it is more of the collective duty upon all of 2 people and raising our voice is louder and louder and students were joined by some faculty members at the rally. we are living this historic moment and students are stepping in to that moment. and as i'm here with students have been camping in the plaza for the last couple of weeks making demands of their university. we are here because of the universe of california has over 500 million dollars invested in blackrock, which invest in companies such as lockhee5 martin, which produced weapons that are being used on civilians in gaza while hundreds of people gathered at

sproul plaza for the rally, they also started expanding the encampment. you can see the tables that they set blocking off the tented area. expansion of the can is escalation in response to what's happening in finals. i'm graduating this semester, but none of that matters you know, people halfway across the world are, you know, are being killed just indiscriminately campus police have been patrolling, but it seems as long as the encampment in the protests remained peaceful. >> they can continue to camp here much different from what we've seen at other universities. i'm sara stinson reporting in berkeley. back to you. >> at francisco state university president met with demonstrators. students demanding university cut financial ties that the college may have with israel. president lynn mahoney says the school may consider avoiding investments in israel based on the quote, mechanics of war.

>> in oakland, employees rallied outside the mcdonald's near lake merritt last week, the fast food restaurant was shut down due to a rat infestation. according to the alameda county's health to report a dead rat was seen in a trap near the soda syrup boxes and rat droppings were found along a wall. workers say they were told to clean up the mess but were not given necessary training or tools to do so. they're calling for the owner to bring in professionals to deal with the problem. we just know that bass explaining. >> and we had a proficient on the touchline. >> workers say they don't feel safe to return to work and plan to strike until their demands are met. new at 10 tonight city of richmond has passed a resolution for the state to use a nonprofit electric company instead of pg and e the vote is symbolic. but the vice mayor says for

it. you don't see that image. you don't see the fog out there right now. the offshore winds. >> going to be kicking in overnight tonight. going to be gusty around parts of the bay area remains mostly clear around the bay area right now to see the fog at all. we'll be right along the immediate coast. otherwise that northerly wind beginning to kick in this high pressure builds overhead. second old offshore wind is going to blow as that ridge continues to build in tomorrow morning and there you go. you can see those winds. they'll be traveling right on this year. and then really begin to subside and seek. and as it does, it gets windy and it gets warm outside. these winds going to be very blustery as we head throughout the night tonight and by tomorrow morning around 07:00am we're talking some 40 plus mile an hour gusts. you can see the areas near vacaville and fairfield, much of the north bay parts of the east bay going to see those gusty winds continuing on and off throughout the day. you'll notice those northerly winds that keep your skies nice and clear and they'll probably ramp up again as we head into early thursday morning. so wind advisories have now been posted across much of the north and the east based on those gust expected to be as

high as 45 miles per hour. watch out, especially if you're driving a high-profile vehicle like a truck, it will be blown around on the road for tomorrow next couple of days. guys, back to you. all right. thank you, lawrence. in dublin, police are looking for 2 people who robbed a mail carrier. >> happened in the area of obispo court near highway 5.80, officers say 2 men wearing black masks demanded the carrier give up her mailbox key and phone. one of the suspects pointed a gun at her. the postal carrier wasn't hurt, but police are investigating the incident and they're asking anyone who has information to give them a call. >> one man is dead. another in jail tonight after a driver ran through a red light in south san jose crashing into a cyclist. cyclists died at the scene marking the 17th traffic deaths of the year. the driver tried to flee, but police did arrest him. >> kron four's jack moment joins joins us live from san jose with community reaction there. jack. >> well, that's right, vicki and ken police say that the

driver of that truck was driving westbound here on capitol expressway. when the light here on center road turned red. that's what police say. the driver of the truck drove through that red light crashing into cyclist and killing that cyclist here on scene at something states treats advocates. tell me it's happening way too often in the city. it's something they want city leaders to fix. >> locals in san jose. you could hardly hear yourself think on capital rest. the ice is racy. lolo farfan has worked at the jack in the box for 9 she has a front row seat to the may have read. he gets a lot of traffic is sad. people >> coming it is said is vague and she says crashes here happen all the time. but just before 7.30, tuesday card that backed up. that the light. boat. >> a driver running a red light. just like many cars did

during our day reporting here, except this time the car crashed into a cyclist killing them on the it's frustrating for safe streets. advocate max siegel capital has been a problematic spot for traffic deaths in san jose. this traffic death, the san jose's 17th for the year and that's outpacing the city's rate of murder. >> the city isn't meeting its goals and i think we need to look at it with a fresh set of eyes. >> siegel says despite work done to fix some of san jose's wide roads, the city is not prioritizing issue. one that was created, he says by design, but they had the ability to break the law. they they funneled to the intersection, really made it easy for them to. >> to come there and kill the mayor's office sent us a statement that blames reckless and distracted driving, quote. >> moments like this are tragic reminder that speeding may save a minute but slowing down literally saves lives. and for siegel with this being the 3rd traffic death in just

2 weeks, more action is needed. now. >> more than ever. >> it doesn't need to be this way. and i we as a community make it need to make it clear to city hall where our priorities are. and it's for safety above saving. a couple minutes on our drive. >> and the driver who police say drove into that cyclist was booked into santa clara county jail. police have not released kinds of charges that about driver is being charged with. now the name of the cyclist who was killed this morning here in san jose. their identity is still being withheld at this time until police can notify their family. for now reporting live here in san jose. jack moment. kron 4 news. thank you. also in san jose, police are busy over cinco de mayo weekend arresting almost 90 people. >> according to the san jose police say made 17 felony arrests, 18 warrant arrests and 52 arrests for misdemeanors. they say most of the crimes committed involved, fistfights, duis, sideshows and reckless behavior.

>> we had a significant amount of activities popping up all over the city in which we had to try and utilize resources and take away from the celebrations, try and combat. officers were getting bottles thrown at their vehicles we had officers had been assaulted. have people driving drunk. we had vehicle crashed into a patrol car was doing a diversion. >> and injure officer. >> 2 people were also stabbed over the weekend. one is still in critical condition. police say despite the chaos that unfolded this year, they still look forward to celebrating the holiday next year. >> police in sunnyvale of arrested a minor in connection to a deadly shooting. investigators say they found a man inside a car with a gunshot wound last month on south bernardo, a avenue near highway 2.37, they arrested the minor last wednesday. no word on any possible motive. still ahead, a driver goes on a rampage across the city ended with a bizarre rest on the embarcadero and 2 people in the hospital tiktok now suing the u.s. government over its new law that could ban the

tells us she's being remembered as a loving mother and co-worker. >> was a she was a force and she was described as the best of us. and now the best of us is her family described her as a start. >> the alameda county sheriff's office mourning the loss of one of their own after an emergency services dispatcher was killed by a suspected drunk driver sunday night 22 feet. now is heading back to her job to work a double when her life was taken at the intersection of east 14th street and 100 50th avenue in san leandro. she loved being the person >> that received those calls for help or assistance. and she just took great pride in it. she took joy in it the day that she was tragically taken from us. she had work her shift and had left at 07:00pm and our dispatch center needed additional help and she agreed to come back. so she was on her way back to work and made

just about 3 blocks shy of our dispatch bunker. >> now started with the department back in 2021. quickly making her joyous presence known and was promoted last year. she was highlighted just 2 weeks ago for national public safety week. fyi now spoke about her love for family. >> another one, my favorite things in family. i have 2 new to not one of them only about a month and a half they are the best part of captain says the family is appreciative of all the love and support from the sheriff's office and surrounding law enforcement agencies. the 32 year-old driver was arrested for driving under the influence and was taken to jail where she remains. >> police say she crashed into females car, causing it to roll over. >> you know, if there was ever a moment to help people understand help devastating drinking and driving can be.

this is an example. unlike other. daughter, a sister. and honestly, the only thing i want to know is that justice gets served reporting tiffany justice kron. 4 news. >> about 6 million dollars are going to be used to build new homes for farmworkers in half moon bay. this is a rendering of what the new homes will look like coming up shortly. the development there it is will be called stone pine cove today. san mateo county supervisors voted unanimously to use the money to buy and install. 47 premade homes for farm workers and their families. 19 of these families were left without a home after the half moon bay mass shooting in january of 2023, 7 farmworkers were killed in that shooting after the shooting was revealed how the mushroom farm workers lived empty container boxes with no running water. no bathrooms, no insulation and no kitchen.

since the shooting. san mateo county has been focusing on proper housing for the farm workers. >> and police are looking for a man who allegedly stole someone's birthday gift off their porch. they say it happened last week around 10:40am, in the morning near a street. officers say the thief is often seen on the same bike as you see there on your screen in the area of a street and east 18th street. if you've seen him, you're asked to call police tiktok is now suing the u.s. government. this after president biden signed a law forcing the chinese owned app. >> to sell to a u.s. company or pap band kron four's. catherine heenan reports. >> we're in some very unusual territory. the u.s. government has passed a law that effectively gives it the right to take away one of the most popular social media apps in the world in arguing against the new law. tiktok says its app is an important avenue for expression.

>> pointing out that more than 170 million people in the u.s. use. it roughly half the country. it says that by taking away the government is infringing on our first amendment rights. meantime, is there really a significant security threat posed by tiktok? >> what i think is interesting here is that the for the last few years now the government keeps saying there is a national security concern with tiktok and we've heard this now under republican and democratic presidents and in both cases, we have not gotten the details, right? the government has not made its case to the american public about why this hugely popular app should be banned. it just teams, gesturing and national security. and i think that's part of why this case is going to be so fascinating. >> there were renewed calls to ban tiktok after the october 7th hamas attack. some users saying more anti-semitic contact was showing up. others

argue the new law is an attempt to suppress pro palestine voice us. in any case, the fallout from a trial could reach far beyond tiktok. one of the things that tiktok makes the case about in its >> filing against the government. is that a number of other social media companies and apps in general would need to be banned under these rules that the government has set out effectively it saying that if you're going to treat us all fairly, which, you know, the constitution says equal protection under the law. then it's not going to just be tiktok tickets band. it's going to be a lot of stuff. and i think that is going to be an interesting part of the debate as well. if the law does not go away, he ensure thanks tiktok would just leave the country. no sale. >> but many would be surprised if this does not end up before the supreme court. catherine heenan kron, 4 news. it is wildfire preparedness week. cal fire holding an event

today at san mateo county. talk about the best ways to limit the risk of wildfires. >> fire fighting alone. is not enough to keep us safe. california's play a crucial role. and fire prevention. i would impress upon everybody to embrace defensible space around your homes, help your firefighters in your law enforcement officers. protect you. and then in the need for evacuation and or defending your home. cal fire also stressing that we should take things lightly just because of all the rain and snow that we've got this year. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here with a look ahead. yeah, it really all depends what kind of weather we get this summer. historically, we've seen some very large fires. >> even wait years. so you just got to be prepared to now is the time to do it out the door tonight. we have got a mostly clear skies around the bay area as we get ready for what looks like the warmest weather of the season to begin to settle in. well, we're going to crank up those

temperatures outside under clear skies. in fact, long-range forecast model from the 13th of the 17 shows a big bull's eye of warm weather coming our running above average for this time of year. in fact, far weather not so bad right now, but by the afternoon tomorrow we'll get those offshore winds blowing and you'll see some a slight upgrade in the fire weather forecast model, of course, as we head into the dry months, that will be a lot more critical specially late in the summer season overall as we look through june july and latest long-range forecast models do shows possibly running above average as far as temperatures are concerned for the summer months ahead. so we've got a long way to go on. looks like things are going to be heating up this week alone. in fact, look at the forecast numbers for highs tomorrow. boyd, beautiful weather around the bay area. got some 70's 80's, even 70's in the san francisco, 81 in hayward as warm as 84 degrees in little more. an 81 in well, throw those offshore winds as we get into thursday. that's when we really start to crank up these temperatures. some

forecast. not >> investigation is reportedly now under way after this incident last month. the dinner for graduating uc berkeley law students got pretty heated. what a pro palestine and protesters stood out to rita speech about ramadan and the war in gaza. the dinner was being held at the home of berkeley law professors video shows one of them taking the microphone away from the student in telling her to leave the home. according to nbc news, uc berkeley is launching a civil rights investigation into allegations of harassment by the protester. fire crews in oakland are investigating a house fire that started this afternoon near laney college. >> firefighters say the last 9 months have been several fires in the same house on east 8th street at 6th avenue. no injuries have been reported from the latest incident. coming up next. 3 suspects arrested in the east bay after police say one of them pointed a gun. >> and a 2 year-old child. and

people, including a teenage girl are in the hospital tonight after a driver hit them and then took off in san francisco are going for dan kerman reports on the driver's rampage in the city that ended right outside. >> our kron 4 studios along

the embarcadero. >> you chase and i'm like it's here along the embarcadero green street where san francisco police took the hit and run suspect into custody. >> this after at least the 3rd incident of the day when the white mustang he was driving slammed into this parked car. no one was injured at this location, but that's not the case at the other locations. police say it all began just before 08:00am kron. 4 news has confirmed employee with urban alchemy was hit while walking near the intersection of jones and market tire marks are clearly visible in the intersection. the victim was taken to a local hospital and will survive. police say a few blocks away. officers spotted the suspect's vehicle driving recklessly when the suspect failed to yield. but officers initiated a traffic stop. police say a vehicle pursuit began about 9.30. the chase

reached francisco middle school supervisor. aaron peskin tells kron 4 it's there. the suspect clipped a 14 year-old girl who was crossing francisco street from the main campus to the auxiliary campus so that there was crossing the street from building to building and was in the crosswalk. >> and the guy was running out of, you know, running. because the police often. so put the good here. if they're going come running girl was taken to san francisco general hospital. >> with a fractured shoulder and ankle but will survive. it's at that point. police say they shut down the chase due to the safety risk. minutes later, officers spotted the suspect's vehicle stopped and embarcadero and green. it's there. they took the suspect into custody. no under certain circumstances. san francisco police are allowed to conduct a vehicle. chase was this pursuit following the proper protocols? at this point? supervisor peskin says both he and the police are evaluating

that. >> in san francisco, dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> new at 10, 3 people were arrested in the east bay after an armed robbery where a man says one of the suspects pointed a gun at a 2 year-old police say the robbery happened last week in downtown berkeley on bancroft way and shattuck avenue. they say after pointing a gun at the child, one of the suspects hit the man in the head and then took off in a car with their belongings. officers later found the car with the suspects tried to stop them. but they said led officers on a chase that ended with a crash in oakland. police say the 3 suspects and ran from the area. but were eventually found and taken into custody. the strait that divides to schools and delay been shut down to car traffic during school hours. >> as kron four's philippe djegal reports tonight, this in response to several shootings and frequent speeders in the area. >> in response to shootings outside vallejo high school. the vallejo city unified school district is closing the

street out front to traffic during school hours for the remainder of the school year. gun violence and speeding. >> that's really down there by train tracks and gas station. the nebraska street closure pilot program started this week and will end june 7th. >> the school district says recent shootings and high-speed rates demonstrated in from the high school and john finnie education complex across the street. we're deciding factors in the closure adding that the inappropriate and unsafe activities have put students and staff at risk of really do see on of most of time because they always live make everybody staying but many students and staff are well aware of the concerning shootings that have happened in the area the past 2 years in 2022. of allay high school staff member was shot after breaking up a fight between students and a group of men last year. a girl was injured by a stray bullet near vallejo. high months later, a teenage boy was shot in from the campus after a football game wrapped up all of the

victims survived definitely around the pandemic. >> time it's and we have been here a few years. it's definitely kind of. we've heard more gunshots since. and nicole on one end of the closure and supports the program, but just hopes it does not lead to unintended consequences. we might have increased traffic and maybe those activities. we get pushed more into our area for the next month. nebraska street between amador and pierce streets will be closed to traffic on school days. only. >> monday through friday, from 9 o'clock in the morning until 4 o'clock in the afternoon in vallejo, philippe djegal all kron, 4 that bill police arrested several suspects including a driver. >> who allegedly drove on the wrong side of interstate 80 during heavy traffic. officers say there was a brief manhunt before finding that driver hiding in a backyard. one other suspect was found to have several outstanding warrants. the driver was

wanted for several charges, including violating a domestic violence restraining order. former solano state prison corrections officers been arrested and charged for allegedly smuggling weapons into the prison. >> and taking bribes the suspect who isn't being named yet served as a correctional officer at the prison between 2020 in 2021. and during that time he allegedly accepted thousands of dollars in cash payments for smuggling cellphones tobacco, alcohol and weapons. tonight, governor newsom's administration is out with some new numbers showing just how much fentanyl the state has sees so far this year. harper's grant lotus joins us now live with a look at those numbers. grant, big numbers. vicki, the california national guard has been assisting cities in the fight against fentanyl in the governor's office says since the start of the year. >> almost 3 and a half million fentanyl pills have been confiscated. it's about 71 100 pounds of fentanyl off the streets. the national guard has been building partnerships

with local law enforcement agencies up and down the state. >> we're not only making the state safer but were reducing the amount of capital that goes back into the hands of transnational criminal organizations. these folks are are making money. a lot of money on the backs of of kids in our state that are dying every day from fentanyl. >> the general there says the state has invested 30 million dollars to expand. the national guard's work in the r of cal guard soldiers at the u.s. mexico border to try to help keep the drugs out. the verse as is mission isn't just to keep fentanyl off the streets. it's also to partner with schools. and just last week, governor newsom's office announced a government run pharmaceutical program that will purchase the overdose-reversing narcan at a discounted price. the goal, of course, is to get more narcan to schools. 2 law enforcement agencies, county health

departments, clinics, community organizations, you name it. if there's narcan there, it could save a life. vicki and ken, back to you. thank you. grant a mile long section of the great highway in san francisco. could one day be closed to cars? >> and turned into a plaza with trails and possibly a staircase leading to the beach for decades. erosion is eating away at the beach and officials say cleaning up all that sand off the road has become a constant problem, especially after winter storms. the plan will still need approval from san francisco board of supervisors. the supervisors are set to discuss the issue later this year. >> zone forecast as we get a live look at the transamerica pyramid. you know, looking at the sand at the beach guess a lot of people will be going to the beach this week is going to get more out there. yeah, i was driving down that great highway on this morning and certainly it is gorgeous out there. it will likely be a place many folks start to flock to as the temperatures heat up getting on the hot side in some parts of bay area. part of the hottest

temperatures of the year so far. so finally, it looks like the weather's turned after that very stormy weather, unusually cold temperatures we had last weekend. now we're completely going the other way and all things are pointing upward as high pressure builds in tonight. mostly clear skies out there right now. temperatures start to bump up a little bit. today were as much as 7 degrees warmer in santa rosa. 5 degrees. warmer in the bottom. 5 degrees. warmer in concord. not much change along the coastline just yet, but that's not going to be long to see that turn as we'll see that likely happening as early as tomorrow. temperatures topping out a little bit above average in concord and san rose up in the mid 70's. 73 in livermore, 72 for a high in san jose. 68 in oakland and 64 degrees in san francisco. overall, not mostly clear skies tonight, but there will be some gusty winds developing, especially in the north and the east bay. and then tomorrow you get those offshore winds. i mean, sunny, all the way to the coastline should be some beautiful weather, windy and a bit on the warm side even along the coastline. we may start to see some of those temperatures break into the low 70's, maybe as early as

thursday. so out the door right now you've got kind of a mixed bag that offshore wind setting itself up kind of cool. 48 degrees in pacific about 60 in the concord fairfield. you're looking to 49 degrees, but 62 in pittsburgh and 54 in sonoma. so as that offshore wind begins to set itself up overnight tonight, high pressure going to build we see those winds tore more of a northeasterly direction that is going to really crank up the temperatures outside. you'll skies. stay nice and clear out there pretty much all night long that offshore wind setting itself up by tomorrow morning. that's what could be most blustery early on. but it's also going to set the stage looks like really nice weather all the way to the coastline, about 70 degrees golden gate park. 75 in the marina about 72 downtown san francisco. 75 degrees in daly city about 63 in half moon bay as you get inside the bay. nice numbers to 75 in burlingame. 74 in millbrae down the peninsula. we go turning into some 70's and a couple 80's out there by tomorrow afternoon. a lots of 80's in the south bay by tomorrow. as you will see,

sunshine all day long. those offshore winds really start to heat things up. east bay temperatures, maybe some mid 80's tomorrow. that's going to be nice day out there on the warm side. 84 pleasanton 84 in livermore about 81 in union city. 82 in san leandro, 80 degrees in berkeley and 81 degrees in concord. so nice weather, windy in spots, especially in the north. they get on the mountaintops to some gusty winds. 35 45 mile an hour gusts up there. so be careful out there for tomorrow. next couple days, though. yeah, the hottest days a week are coming our way. maybe some 90's as we get into late thursday and feiday, cooling down the fog makes return along the coastline as we head in toward the weekend. that will cool those temperatures off first. but staying toasty still some 80's inland over the weekend about that was a typo. what's one? yeah, possibly. yeah. i mean, we're kind of in this nice warm stretch here for about the next 10 yeah. that's why we have your tenant him. so, you know. good thing can thank you as well as you do. plan on driving to the beach. gas prices across the bay area are steadily dropping from the
