>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> nonprofit is this for learning more about the major health code violations at forest. alameda county officials to shut down an oakland mcdonald's this evening. we're getting our very first look at that report by the county's health department. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne kron four's lezla gooden has been following this story since it broke friday afternoon. she joins us here in the studio with the latest developments. >> yep, that's right. that mcdonald's and jackson streets filled a surprise inspection on friday. and today i was able to take at look at the full health report done by the alameda county health department. now, according to this report, they found indications of rat activity, including droppings and a dead rat.

>> on friday, the alameda county health department shut down this mcdonald's at 13, 30 jackson street in oakland with customers waiting in line on from the health department. they have some sanitation the season they need to clean up. >> and we saw inspector filling out this health report. it reveals that 7 violations were found at the restaurant, including rodent activity. >> the report explains rodent droppings were seen around the water heater along the walls and wrote it. traps responded as well to hold were seen in the kitchen and a dead rat was found on a trap near the soda syrup boxes. we feel like. >> a lot of more rats than the past that last time this is oscar rodriguez who has worked there since 2022. and says the closure is needed good because i know that people it's not going to takes closer to get and the like infection are gets about and they're at. but

allegedly high when he crashed into them. he bailed out of jail last week and remains out of custody as of today. so far, no criminal charges have been filed against him. detectives are waiting for a toxicology report to be completed. >> developing news we're following this evening. israel has started military operations into the gaza city of rafah. this started just hours after hamas announced it had accepted a cease-fire proposal to halt its war with israel. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office said that the proposal was far from israel's the central demands, but that it would send negotiators to continue talks on a cease-fire agreement. protesters around the world have been calling for a ceasefire in gaza for months now. first, rob nesbitt joins us here in studio with reaction from both sides on the idea of a cease-fire deal. rop. ken, when i reached out to a local jewish organization

and those who have organized cease-fire, protests in the bay area. >> i was expecting more celebration. both sides seem skeptical that a deal will be reached. >> since israel wage war against the terrorist group hamas. 7 months ago, we've seen the impacts of protests from college campuses to the golden gate bridge. simmer, robbie, with the arab resource and organizing center has taken part in demonstrations, calling for a cease-fire and was relieved to hear the update monday that hamas accepted an egyptian qatari proposal for a cease-fire. >> a little bit of hope and some relief, right? the idea that maybe all of this carnage. a tense up can finally end after months and tens of thousands of people dead. >> the proposal accepted by hamas called for a permanent cease-fire. u.s. pop of israeli hostages for prisoners and would allow displaced gazans to return to their homes as israel has ordered about 100,000 palestinians evacuate the city of rafah before a ground invasion by militants there. to me, this looks like them trying to pump the brakes on the operation

the idf to exercise caution to minimize civilian casualties. reporting in studio. i'm rob nesbitt kron 4 news. thank you, rob. and with talks of a cease-fire, we visited the pro-palestine encampment in stanford to talk to students who say they won't be backing down regardless of today's proposed announcement. >> positions still maintains that obviously divestment disclosure is our biggest aim, as is the fact that we maintain ideologically that while cease-fire is obviously at the moment, we're still pushing for a fully liberated palestine as soon as possible. >> directly across the pro-palestine encampment on campus. a memorial set up white plaza commemorating those killed and held hostage by hamas. it falls on the very same day as the holocaust remembrance day. organizers tell us that the chairs that you see symbolize the more than 100 people being held hostage since october 7th. well, these place markers, those represent grave sites

drastically. now you're seeing the couple batches of fog begin to roll back in along the coastline summit, beginning to move inside the bay. a little breeze out there as well. but overall, i think the pattern going to shape up to be very nice for this week ahead going put away the rain clouds for now warm those temperatures up. a lot of 60's out the door at this time. if you're headed on a little cool breeze along the coastline, highs today, actually topping out. well, still a little bit below the avlrage. what a change from the weekend highs in the 50's on saturday. so watch him climb back up near normal lot of 60's out there today. i think we go above normal starting tomorrow around parts of the bay area, then well above normal for the remainder of the week, we do have one last little cold front that we've got to deal with. you can see all those clouds making their way through northern california part of a weak system. that's kind of sliding on by once that moves to our east, high pressure is going to build in behind it. the wind's going to be a little gusty in spots. but other than that, we've got a lot of sunshine and much warmer weather coming your way. we'll talk more about that a few minutes. all right, lawrence, san francisco officials say that for the 3rd

time in a row, their quarterly count of tents and structures. >> on city streets is actually dropped as our kron four's. dan kerman reports tonight, though, please. they know they're still a lot more work to be done. >> san francisco's tenderloin is far from 10th free, but a drive through the area suggests there are fewer tents and encampments than before. and now city data backs that up ever sense. 9th circuit court appeals decision once we started to go into action, we've seen a decline of encampments over 40%. so we're really excited about what this means to the stats show the number of tents and structures has dropped from 609 in july of 2023. to 361 in april of this year. last week when i was walking around the tenderloin and some of those areas where they have been some real problems with it encampments. they're gone. and you notice the big difference in how the streets look and

how they feel when you walk down the streets and how much cleaner they are. and while there may be fewer tense there, still a lot of people on the streets and because of that many who live and work in san francisco still see little change. i literally walked a gauntlet every morning from the bart station to get here to my so no, i don't see an improvement may be in different areas it is possible, but not in this the mayor says in camp and outreach teams have conducted 242 operations this year. >> and made 1530 encounters with individuals of those. the city says 30% of the time the offer of shelter was accepted. >> 60% of the time it was refused and 10% of the time individuals were already housed. we've increased our shelter says have been mayor by 66%. we've increased our housing options by over 50% for people on the where

>> some appear on the iconic golden gate bridge, a testament to america's greatness. california's greatest. we could be more proud to announce today. record breaking tourism numbers in the state of california over 150 billion dollars tourism. spend unprecedented in our state's history. >> governor newsom heading to the top, the gate bridge, the town of huge tourism boost in california. and the governor announcing that tourists have spent more than 150 billion dollars in california in the past year. surpassing the 144 billion that that was a record set in 2019. governor newsom says that not only is the state retaining its title as the world's 5th largest economy. it's also growing in population for the first time since the covid pandemic. according to the latest data,

the travel industry supported about 1.2 million jobs last year. that's up about 6%. tourists generate about 4% more revenue than 2023. and spent about 5% more than they did before. although the governor chose to announce the tourism boost from san francisco. the city is still not seeing a full recovery from covid like the rest of california. san fran side, san francisco saw just over 13 billion dollars from tourist in 2023. that is about a billion more than 2022. but it's still about a billion dollars shy of the pre-pandemic record which was recorded in 2019 new legislation out of san francisco aims to bolster downtown areas statewide. san francisco assemblymember matt haney. >> introducing a bill that he says he's going to allow state lawmakers to quickly green light office to housing projects, putting an end to lengthy and costly approval process. ease the legislation also prioritizes preserving historic downtown buildings. the bill heads to the assembly

appropriations committee for a hearing on wednesday. san francisco mayor london breed kicked off small business week in the city at this event is presented by the san francisco chamber of commerce meant to showcase events pop-up some networking opportunities all across the city. this year's theme is make it here. it will focus on the manufacturing and production sectors. mayor breed says that small businesses are the heart of the community. small business week runs now through may 10. >> today is the first day of the rs. a conference in the city. the annual cyber security expo returns to moscow. center for 4 days this week. speakers include officials from google, the secretary of state antony blinken and a special performance by alicia keys. happening tomorrow. apple is inviting people to let loose in cupertino. the tech giant is hosting one of its famous unveiling event at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning. let loose is the slogan for the event. and right now that's about a.l we really know about it. however, there are rumors online that

the occasion could have something to do with ipads. >> governor newsome declaring this wildfire preparedness week all week long. cal fire. it's going to work with other agencies to host events to raise awareness about how calfire prepares each year for events are going to be held statewide. that includes an event tomorrow and ella granada in san mateo county. that are 4 zone forecast. getting a live look right now at coit tower. >> the windy out there still pretty light. >> these days. yeah. and lawrence, now we're switching our attention from rain and snow to heat and sun. yeah. i got a long hot summer ahead of us and it looks like things are going to be switching gears quite a bit. even this week. in fact, we're going to see those offshore winds beginning to kick in. and typically those are some of the winds we worry about some of the fire conditions around the bay. of course, early in the season. things very wet out there. so don't worry about the moisture levels just yet, but that it's going to change as we head throughout the season, especially in the

fall outside. right now, the sea breeze is blowing. we've got some fog out there as well. you see the fog making its way over san bruno mountain. right now. the winds now little blustery in spots got some 20 plus mile hour gusts along the coastline. well, you're going to see a lot more wind on the way. in fact, we've got one last little front that's going to dive just to the east over the great basin behind that high pressure starts to build in. we get a big contrast pressures will see a lot of winds kicking up around the bay area specially and parts of the north and the east bay. here's the forecast models for the period here as we head through time through the night tonight and then tomorrow. and then as we get toward tomorrow night, we really start to see the change more of a northerly wind that offshore wind starts to kick in. that's where you start to see the color changing to read some purple out there. some winds gusting 30, 40 plus mph. blustery afternoon through wednesday as well and probably into parts of thursday. but those offshore winds also bring nice temperatures around the bay area, wind advisory posted in solano county expecting some of those winds sustained about 20 to 30 miles an hour gusting. 35 the 45 miles per

hour. so if you're traveling there, high profile vehicle, a truck, be careful. it's going to be blown around. pretty good. as we head into wednesday and thursday. check out the temperatures, though, tomorrow. we'll watch. these numbers really begin rebound outside 70's in the san jose. 67 degrees in oakland and 65 degrees in san francisco. really some nice weather ahead and looks like as we head in the dry months here. i don't think we're going to see another storm like we had this that was some kind yeah. so the hard i don't see anything coming up on the models. the long range models i can always tell when when you worry about think of the knitted wbre-wyou just pacing. yeah, you pretty excited about this and habits like you want to get the word out to people, know, it's just going to be just like any ordinary may storm. >> that had problems for and the high country. of course, i always care. vicki thanks, guys. hey, take a look at this. 4 people rescued after their boat overturned in tamales bay marin county fire along with the sonoma county

sheriff's department. they just spring into action sunday afternoon. you can see rescue divers securing a rescue line to get those folks out of the water. dangerous situation not known if any of the rescued people there suffered any serious injuries, but they did get out of the water. it's great white country, too. white house is for a postponed the fda's plan to ban menthol cigarettes. that decision sparking some backlash from antismoking groups. >> our washington, d.c., correspondent raquel martin has the details. >> a national ban on menthol cigarettes may have to wait until after the november election. the white house is postponing an fda rule to remove the tobacco products from shelves. unfortunately, for every day there is a delay. more kids will become addicted to tobacco and fewer people and their addiction. the american lung association says the white house decision will ultimately cause lies. menthol are a menace to public health. the fda proposed a rule to ban menthol cigarettes

back in 2022 citing evidence and science. >> showing the products are harmful and the biden administration endorsed the move. however, in a recent statement, the department of health and human services says, quote, it's clear there are still more conversations to have conversation about what doctor chris pernell as the director for health equity with the naacp with fda issued that draft full that with issue based on a mountain effects. pernell says inaction disproportionately harms black communities. >> fda studies show more than 80% of black smokers rely on menthol cigarettes. she argues a delay won't by the president any favor at the ballot box. it's absolutely the wrong call to make. the fda's says the agency is still committed to banning menthol cigarettes but is not providing a timeline in washington. raquel martin.

>> at least a dozen people were sickened by an e-coli outbreak linked to organic walnuts from california. they were sold in halves and pieces from gibson farms. it's based in hollister. the fda says

they were sold in bulk bins at natural food stores such as whole foods. the walnuts were sold in several states, including here in california. 7 people had to be hospitalized and 2 of them developed a dangerous form of kidney disease. the products have expiration dates between may 20st and june, 7th kids. it's least 2 bay area cities will be able to get meals this summer. first, the san francisco free summer meals program. it's coming back this year. >> starting june 10th through august, 16th, children and teenagers under 18. we'll be able to get free breakfast and lunch. there will be more than 75 locations handing out food throughout the city last summer. more than 85,000 meals were passed out in san francisco. and children in berkeley will also be able to get a free breakfast and lunch this summer. it's part of the national school lunch program. all students under the age of 18 country participate. most schools will begin handing out the meals on june 5th. the program will run through august 9th berkeley high school will begin handing out
