platforms. raj mathai joins us now with what's coming up next at 530. janelle, happy monday to you. the big developing news now in the middle east, a possible cease fire between israel and hamas here at home. college students continue to protest the important step taken today at one of our bay area campuses. also, another insurance company is raising its rates in california. the reason for the hike and how much more you could pay, and a lot of glitz and glamor on the red carpet for the met gala. the bay area celebrity that is front and center at tonight's event. welcome back. the news at 530 starts right now. thanks so much for joining us. i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. progress tonight toward a possible cease fire in gaza. hamas has accepted a brokered deal by egypt and qatar. israel has yet to respond. here at home, protesters at san francisco state got part of what
5:31 pm
they wanted a face to face meeting with the university president. nbc's marianne favro is on campus. this is one of the first times in the nation that a university president met face to face with student protesters in front of the entire student body as the tent city of pro-palestine student protesters at san francisco state grows to 50, their list of demands is growing to today. eight student leaders met face to face with university president lynn mahoney and other administrators in front of hundreds of other students. they are demanding the university be more transparent about its investments and divest quickly from companies providing military aid to israel. we also hope that she understands the urgency within our timeline, president mahoney told the students. they have been heard. she. agreed the university could be more transparent with its
5:32 pm
investment, and vowed to provide more information on a website and also look more closely at future investments. but the second is to take another look at that investment policy. students also asked mahoney to acknowledge the killings in palestine as genocide, but she said that was not her role as a university president. genocide is not a partizan issue, and we hope that through continuous conversation and collaboration with our student community, we can recognize that some san francisco state professors agreed. i think president mahoney doesn't get to say i'm president of the institution, therefore i'm exempted from moral obligation to address the horrors that happened in the world today. as a president of a university, i don't make political statements. i have in the past broadly talked about how i don't support, as an individual, violence or violence against unarmed civilians, protesters. students will now meet to talk about what the university president is offering and decide if they would like to move forward. in the meantime, they say they have no intention
5:33 pm
of packing up their tents because they still have much more to fight for. in san francisco, marianne favro nbc, bay area news. thank you marianne. joining us now is our political analyst, larry gerston. okay, larry, dozens of college protests going on across the country, including several here in the bay area the israel-hamas war really seems to resonate with these college students. but what about the rest of america? the american population? it's a strange time, nelle, because kids at school, you know, havtheir own values that they explore and enjoy and sometimes hate in their own little bubble. nationally, it's another story. so weut together how people felt about the vietnam war in 1968 and how they feel now about hamas and isra. anyou can take a look absolutely amazing. they ranked the vietnam war first. 44% of americans in 1968. that'our most important issue. and then you lo at hamas, israel war. what's going on there? 2, 2% say that's the most importantssue that ranked 17th, by the way, on
5:34 pm
the list altogether 2. and by the way, they say it's just not that important. it just isn't. now. now it goes beyond that if you're 35 or under, 2% also said the same thing. so it's not just old fogy saying this, it's the population at large. one nbc poll found that maybe 7% might change their votes one way or another in an election because of this issue. but 7, on the one hand, isn't a lot, but on the other hand, in a tight election, it might make a difference. it might make. why is it so small? why is it only 2? i mean, with college students and the rest of americans polled, they are learning about lots of things and they're concerned about such things as peace. of course, divestiture, something that very few of us ever talk about. divestiture we're thinking about things like inflation, the economy, immigration, abortion. these are the kinds of issues that are really on the minds of most americans, not the kids, though they've got other things to think about and just shows you the extent to which they are in one world, and the rest of us
5:35 pm
are in another. the vietnam war also affected many more americans. 2.7 million americans participated in the vietnam war alone, 2.5, and most of them were very young. so kids at that point really had a vested interest, not just in the war itself, but what involvement they might have. no americans are participating in this war, so that's a big difference, right? a cease fire proposal on the table. we just heard from marianne favro, some student protesters say that's not enough. with just this proposal. they're staying put. others may be forced to leave or leave. what do you think is going to happen? i think in some ways this is going to become something of a non-issue just because of time. the campuses are on the way to ending may or june. it's over for the summer. the kids are not going to have the same place to get together, put all their energy, and so the kind of dissipate, if you will, in the fall, it is still going on. i think you can you can think about more of these kinds of protests. but for now, it's likely to dissipate, not because of any great change, but simply because the numbers won't be
5:36 pm
there as the schools close. that's that's true, but their voice is certainly being heard right now. okay larry gerston, thank you so much. okay, raj. janelle thank you. former president trump was back in a court today. it's the start of the third week of his hush money payment trial. mr. trump is on trial for allegedly fudging business documents to hide a hush money payment to star stormy daniels. today, the prosecution called the accounts payable supervisor for the trump organization. she testified that mr. trump had final approval of invoices and could void checks as well. the judge also said mr. trump violated the gag order by posting on social media, and then threatened the former president with jail time if he continued to violate that gag order. the prosecution says it expects to finish its testimony in two weeks. an update now on the plan to oust the speaker of the house, mike johnson. this is being spearheaded by fellow republican congresswoman marjorie taylor greene, the two today met behind closed doors. speaker johnson said the meeting
5:37 pm
was, quote, productive for months. congresswoman greene rallied against speaker johnson. she threatened to force a vote to kick him out if he approved aid to ukraine. that's exactly what he did. about two weeks ago. last week, congresswoman greene publicly vowed to file a motion to vacate johnson's chair by this week. the two will meet again tomorrow. new details about those missing american australian surfers in mexico. mexican officials say they were most likely victims of an attempted carjacking. australian brothers jake and callum robinson and their american friend jack carter rowe, disappeared over a week ago while on a surfing trip in ensenada yesterday. three bodies were found in a remote well in baja family members have identified their remains. the medical examiner's office in ensenada says they were all shot. investigators say thieves killed them because they wanted to steal their truck. police have arrested at least three people. another united states

citizen has been detained in russia. us soldier gordon black, the army says he was stationed in south korea. he finished his deployment there and was headed back to the united states, but made a side trip without permission to a town about 80 miles from russia's border with north korea, visiting a woman he was romantically involved with last thursday, the russian police arrested him for stealing from a woman. it's unclear if it was the same woman he was visiting. representative mike mccall is warning all americans not to travel to russia because it's not safe. home insurance is about to get more expensive for some california homeowners. one of the largest home insurance companies in california, travelers insurance is raising its rates. on average, rates will go up over 15% for its program, called quantum home 2.0. in addition to the rate change, the company said it will drop thousands of customers due to wildfire risk, it said after the wildfire losses in recent years, it's trying to reduce
5:39 pm
exposure to fires. earlier this year, state farm also said it will drop some policyholders for the same reason. well, time to get fancy. there is a bay area connection here to the met gala. it's happening right now. in fact, there is a bay area connection from oakland. oakland native zendaya dressed, created by her dress created by john galliano and styled by her longtime collaborator la roche. there she is looking stunning. the gown features a blue and green bird on her shoulder. she's one of the co-chairs of tonight's event. the met gala is an annual fundraiser for the metropolitan museum of art there in new york city. other co-chairs include chris hemsworth, jennifer lopez, and bad bunny, all dressed up here, vogue editor in chief anna winter is behind the met gala every year this year she wore a black coat with flower emblems, many have stayed in theme with floral and garden prints, along with some outfits echoing styles of the past. this is fabulous. a

lot of people in the newsroom watching the live feed of this. i know we have been. it's so nice to see all the glitzy and you have me reading this. this is you should be reading. you're more interested watching it. raj, you are you are watching it too. this afternoon everyone looked good. the california latino legislative caucus honored 16 latino luminaries today, and it's part of the second 22nd annual latino spirit awards. it celebrates the remarkable achievements and pioneering contributions of prominent community members. among today's honorees is our own pilar nino, a dayside reporter for our sister station telemundo 48. nino was honored for achievement in journalism. award recipients are also being honored for serving as role models and community leaders. you can now text 911 for help, but you need to know how to text 911 so first responders can actually find you. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you how next i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri.

sunshine today. it warmed up a little bit right now 65, in napa. but it's going to get a lot hotter this week. i've got details on that. plus what you may not be thinking about this time of the year. that has to do
5:42 pm
5:43 pm
you can text 9112, but our investigative unit recently exposed some big limitations. consumer investigator chris kamara shows us the right way to text 911, and why you might need to call for help anyway. texting 911 is simple, but for most of us, it shouldn't be our primary way of seeking help. the fcc says always contact 911 by making a voice call if you can. here's why. texting 911 doesn't work everywhere, and even where it does work, there's often a gap text to 911 doesn't always
5:44 pm
know where you are. recently my investigative unit colleague candice nguyen made national news exposing text to 911 location limitations. if you have to text 911, let's look at how to properly do it so first responders can actually find you and help you first start a new text type 911 in the two field. no dashes, no spaces, just 911. and don't start a group text. now say whether you need police or paramedics and why. give your full address and cross streets or building location plus your location in the building. let's say 30 rock. 30 rock is a big building. what about the floor number? what about the room? same if you're home text specifics like i'm in the kitchen. don't use text, speak like a fake or brb. the operator might not know what you mean. we hope you saw this advice in the back of your mind. we also hope you never have to use it. okay, give really good advice. jeff
5:45 pm
ranieri is here now to kick off our week. i think we're are we in smooth sailing for a little while now, a little bit here. i know we're all looking for sunshine to give us a few days, man. saturday was rough right? a downpour? yeah, the gutters were overflowing, so much rain coming down in a short amount of time. at least we're back in the sunshine right now. and then that hotter weather is on the way. speaking of which, i do have some things you may not be thinking about here as those temperatures change. and i'll get to that here in just a little bit. right now here in san jose, it warmed up from those low 50s on saturday to 67 today, sunny skies will be back down into the 50s by nine and 10:00. and i can tell you there's no way we're going to see any rainfall as we head throughout this week. we have high pressure just offshore. so that's taking the storm track that had that unusual dip to the south this weekend and moving it way off to the north. so that's going to allow some warmer air to win out and heat us up. but the one thing we will be
5:46 pm
watching is a system here that's moving in from the east. now again, it's not going to be able to get close to us because of how the storm track is positioning, but because of the placement of that low pressure over the intermountain west, it is going to help to kick up some wind here throughout the bay area. as this area of high pressure and low pressure just kind of battle it out. so look for some on and off wind gusts in the mountains, 15 to about 40, especially in the north bay mountains as we head through wednesday and also thursday. otherwise as we roll it through tomorrow morning's forecast, temperatures here in the 40s, mostly sunny skies that will dip it down to 46 here for the tri valley. one spot that will be in the 50s is san francisco, and for the east bay will be at a cool 47 temperatures through tomorrow. warming up by about 3 to 6 degrees. that's going to put us back in the 70s, 73 here in los gatos, mid 70s through san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. also similar weather here out to concord 76, danville 75, fremont 73. the peninsula 71. in redwood city. then you got your chilly weather here at the coastal areas from that ocean breeze. 65 in the outer
5:47 pm
sunset and right here for the north bay, 75 in santa rosa, down to novato. 73 okay, so hotter weather on the way, but just how hot and for how long? look at this ten day forecast in san jose. we're up to 86 thursday 88, friday 89 sunday. drop it off a little bit here as we head through sunday's forecast to 85. and then eventually some cooler weather as we roll through next week. at least slightly cooler still in the 80s. overall so really the warmest trend we've seen all year long. okay. and with this heat kind of coming in, some stuff you may not be thinking about this time of the year, but remember to have your spf high. don't forget the pets. they need that water too. and this is the unusual one. look out for snakes . there is certainly some higher activity this time of the year as temperatures warm up their cold blooded animals. they want to head out and get into some of that heat, get some of that sunshine and then here's the thing. they like to head back
5:48 pm
near your house to get cooler. sometimes we actually ran into a snake yesterday afternoon. everyone is okay. we took care of the problem. lucy is fine, but it, you know, certainly is eye popping when you see a snake near your house. so just watch out for that snake activity this time of the year. they sell some repellent. you can also get if you got a larger problem, but that is, you know, increased activity here as we head throughout this month right here in san francisco. man that was a close one. we are looking at temperatures in the 70s wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday, then down into the 60s by sunday. and for the inland valleys we'll go up to some 80s, the warmest there on saturday. up to 89 and 84 on sunday i was out. okay. we took care of the problem. you take care of the snake problem, we got rid of it. let's just say that. but i was out looking at an apple tree near our house and i was like, oh, is there any apples coming on it? and then i heard something and i looked down and it was a snake. it was not a rattlesnake, thankfully, and it was camouflage. it looked like a
5:49 pm
clump of leaves, but it was kind of starting to get wound up and backed away, called lucy over. did she start barking? no, i said, get over here now. so we're leaving. we went the other way and yeah, everything's okay. but increased activity when those temperatures warm up. yeah. good morning. thank you jeff, you're up next a bittersweet afternoon for the giants a top prospect making his major league debut. can the giants snaput of their slump? o

not good. it has been rough. send help quick for sure. today they turn to a rookie for some help in philadelphia for that young man. his name is mason black. making his major league debut. he grew up near philly rooting for the phillies. now he's pitching against him. you see his friends and family, about 60 of them were on hand. first inning. he looked good striking out bryce harper. how's that? harper would later, though, get revenge. a few innings later, bryce harper would hit a three run homer off of him. the phillies cruised to a 6 to 1 win. giants don't have any offense. they've lost four games in a row and six of their last seven on this road trip. they're in colorado tomorrow night. a new chapter for women's basketball here in the bay area. a big announcement made this morning about who will lead golden state's wnba franchise. the team has named ohama nianhan as the general manager. she was formerly the assistant gm for the new york liberty, and her

five years with that team, they went to the playoffs three times before the announcement became official. nianhan spent some time with the golden state warriors staff and expressed gratitude and excitement, leading this new team forward to my parents, mcdaniel said she would dimensions her which in tree means, i'm grateful. i'm thankful to god. for putting me in their hands. i'm grateful for their sacrifice price, and their wisdom that they've shared with me, nianhan says the next step is building the rest of the staff, then scouting for players. the team will play its first season next year at chase. we're looking forward to that. joe lake of the warriors owner all fired up. they're up next. astronauts are set to take off for the international space station tonight. why this mission is different from the others and will have a lot of norman, bad news...

definite sign the paris olympics not far off, we saw the olympic cauldron for the first time today. the big reveal came just 81 days until the olympics in paris this summer. usually the olympic flame is held in a pot, but this one is more minimalist. the designer called it pure in its form. on the last day of the torch relay, the final runner will light the cauldron at the opening ceremony. it will symbolize the start of the olympic games. we're counting down, but right now we got a lot more news ahead. audrey asistio joins us now with what's coming up next. janelle and roger right now at six talks of a possible cease fire in the israel-hamas war, how bay area pro-palestinian protesters are reacting to this news today as college campus demonstrators reached the three week mark. also fed up, neighbors are taking matters into their own hands. what they're doing now to fight the rampant crime in oakland. and payments have started arriving for people who took theranos blood tests, the dollar amounts those customers are getting, plus new reports on elizabeth holmes and her prison

sentence getting cut down once again. the news at six starts right now. good evening and thanks for being with us on this monday. i'm raj mathai and i'm audrey asistio, a major development tonight in the war in gaza. maybe people in the southern city of rafah started celebrating today on news that hamas had accepted a ceasefire brokered by outside countries. but israel has not and says it still plans to advance on rafah. while it examines this proposal, nbc bay area sergio quintana reports. news that hamas accepted terms of an egypt qatar negotiated cease fire came just as us secretary of state antony blinken was wrapping up a visit to a south bay biotech firm. he made no comments about the potential deal there. secretary blinken is also the keynote speaker at the rsa cybersecurity conference in san francisco, where he talked about concerns about emerging technologies like

artificial intelligence. as confident as we are and its potential, we're deeply aware of its risks from displacing jobs to generating false information to promoting bias and discrimination, to enabling the destabilizing use of autonomous weapons. so we're working with our partners to prevent and address these issues at the state department, spokesman matthew miller says the us government has been pressing for a cease fire for a while now. there has been a significant offer on the table. the ball has been in hamas's court. we have made clear that they should accept that offer. but a senior israeli official quickly told nbc news the details of this cease fire are not part of the framework. the israeli government agreed to. among the conditions, israel would have to release 33 palestinian prisoners in exchange for each israeli hostage, and would have to agree to end military operations in gaza. following a meeting of the israeli war cabinet, a spokesman for prime minister benjamin netanyahu said they will continue with plans for an operation in rafah while working on a cease
