did earlier this morning. still some spotty showers here approaching the sunol grade near fremont. a little more now leaving the tri-valley. the action at the sauer continues to be around the sierra. also, intense thunderstorms there approaching the sierra foothills. ongoing winter storm warning until 8 a.m. there across the high country into the sunday forecast. but for us, we'll begin to see some improvement. more sunshine tomorrow. showers start to move out and a warming trend set to move in. the details on that. our 7-day forecast coming up in about 12 minutes. all right. thanks rob. don't forget you can track this weather while you're on the go by downloading our nbc bay area app. just point your phone at that qr code on your screen. i will show that a little later in the newscast, and it will take you right to our radar. new at six a brazen theft at a sunnyvale jewelry store, police say. shortly after one this afternoon, a group of thieves smashed the front door of knighton jewelers on el camino real. employees think there were about ten people, ten suspects, and they say at least

personal relationship with our superintendent because of his relationship with the superintendent's husband and the superintendent, kent turnage, is still there because of his relationship to the superintendent. at the district's next school board meeting this wednesday at 7 p.m, the board president tells us he plans to call for a vote to remove the superintendent from her position over these allegations. we have reached out to turnage as well as the superintendent, stephanie anello, and we have not heard back. we are learning more about the suspect in a freeway shooting that shut down interstate 80 in solano county for hours. late last night, the chp gave an update that the suspect was still alive after he apparently shot himself inside his car. initially, officers said the man was dead at the scene, but we now know a first responders were able to revive him at the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. this chase started on highway 101, in sonoma county, after a woman reported someone firing a shot hitting her car. officers chased the suspect to 80 in fairfield, where he refused to

surrender, causing an hours long closure and massive freeway backup. we also have a follow up on the two san jose police officers wounded during a shootout thursday night. the police officer's association tells us the officer, who suffered critical injuries, has undergone two successful surgeries and is now stable. the second wounded officer continues his recovery as well with less serious injuries. the shootout happened about 1030 at a hotel in san jose, santa teresa neighborhood. officers were following up on a disturbance call when police, say 33 year old kevin briones opened fire. briones, who has a long criminal history, is now in custody on multiple felony charges. the pro-palestinian camp at uc berkeley, very active this weekend. even in all this rain. it has been two weeks since they first set up camp. tonight, the movement shows no signs of slowing. there are about 150 tents there and that number is growing. students and community members are supporting the protest, saying they will not go

home until their demands are met. they want the administration to divest from all companies that do business with israel, and they want the school to support an immediate cease fire. meanwhile, an uptick in confrontations has some jewish students worried for their own safety. the school has increased security, they tell us, and is offering to escort students who feel uncomfortable. the pro-palestine encampments and san francisco state is gaining ground as well. it began monday with perhaps 25 tents or so, and as you see, it's far more than that today, organizers say, because of donations of tents and tarps from the community, the rain did not impact demonstrators or food supplies. the demands include disclose university investments with companies doing business with israel and divest immediately. we want the csu to be, transparent about where they are sending our money, and we want them to recognize and to divest from that funding so that we are not funding a war through our college tuition. a
6:09 pm
spokesperson for the encampment says there will be a rally monday afternoon, and they are hoping university president lynn mahoney will be there to respond to their demands. the white house says a deal for a cease fire in gaza may finally be within reach. a delegation from hamas is in cairo tonight. egyptian media are reporting that there is noticeable progress in ceasefire talks, but no announcement expected tonight. israeli leaders say they will not agree to end the war as part of a deal to release hostages. they also say even if there is a temporary ceasefire, the israeli military will eventually enter rafah in southern gaza and destroy the remaining hamas battalions. the united nations says if israel carries out military offensive in rafah without measures to protect civilians, hundreds of thousands of people will be in danger. and still ahead, a beloved comic book is celebrating its last free comic book day the store. it's not the final chapter for them. we'll take you there in 90s. and do you love star wars so much? you

home of flying colors comics, but the owner says this is not the end of their story. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. there was a long line outside flying colors, comics and other cool stuff on free comic book day inside the concord store has exactly what this comic book fan is looking for. i really like comic books because it brings literature and artwork together in this really awesome way. i love artwork, i love looking at art. plenty of heroes and villains. the idea for free comic book day was born right here and really took off the largest event in comics every year. it's a free comic book day, an event that i founded back in 2001 that got its first event in early 2002. so what inspired flying colors comics owner joe field looked out our front window and i saw a line

third annual our heritage five k. it's a three mile walk or run, organizers say. the event in bonnie's the unity and the strength of the community, and we were there for the opening ceremony in japantown and then runners took off on that route. it passes by 14 different aapi landmarks, including including the asian art museum and dragon gate in the city's chinatown. the event is put on by the nonprofit asians are strong. we were expecting about 1000 people, but i think about 3400 came out today, rain or shine. you know, i was really impressed by our own community. you know, this shows resilience. like we want to celebrate. we want to show how proud we are and what more dramatic fashion than in the rain. right amazing attitude there. look, they got their umbrellas and everything. now that race ended of course, after a run. what do you need? you need food. food as well as cultural dances. there are movie marathons and then there are star wars level marathons in

honor of may the 4th or star wars day, a san francisco theater hosted a movie marathon of all nine star wars films back to back to back to back to back to back. if everyone looks a little run down by the time they reach the trivia part of the event, it's because this was 21. he's sleeping. the force was not with him. this was 21 hours in. my gosh, just squeezing all nine films. the alamo drafthouse cinema kicked things off last night. one fan we talked to says even though he fell asleep several times, he'd do it all again in a heartbeat. really. just the culture and the fandom that brings everyone together and celebrate each generation of all star wars. so he's got some wise advice whispering in his ear right there with yoda, the alamo drafthouse cinema was one of only ten theaters in the country to run the full skywalker saga marathon. 20 hours. that's a little much. that's why a lot. that's why you need to take a nap. this is a

good place for it. earlier today, yes, it was the place to be had about a half inch. an inch and a half of rain. more than a month's worth by may standards around the bay area still seeing a few showers out there and it's been cold. how about temperatures today? 15 to almost 20 degrees below the average? yes, we should be in the 70s today, but this is why we've been calling it may uary weather because those are highs closer to what you might get in february and march. mid to upper 50s around the bay area. still pretty cool outside right now. 54 degrees. nearly an inch of rain falling earlier today in san francisco. oakland close to three quarters of an inch of rain only 55 degrees. walnut creek seeing partly cloudy skies. also 55/8600 of an inch of rain coming down there near walnut creek and concord today and san jose. still some dark skies to the east at 56 degrees. more than a half inch of rain fell earlier. now watching decreasing showers heading into sunday morning. and then the pivot returns monday and tuesday. warming as high pressure builds in. we'll see seventys and 80s returning by
6:17 pm
midweek, but still some roaming downpours out there. one here, crossing the coast near half moon bay and around the peninsula. you see those scattered showers out towards fremont. south of there, alum rock area two. you're seeing those showers moving off to the east. here's the rain band associated with the very soggy start to the saturday. now off to the east and the ongoing snow for the sierra, now locally isolated showers ongoing, especially near the coast and maybe the santa cruz mountains and san jose. the focus there into early tomorrow morning, but a lot less showing up now in the futurecast as you move forward into your sunday. partly cloudy skies, maybe an isolated shower or two on the inland hilltops there out towards lake county and napa county during the afternoon. so a few showers tomorrow morning. but widespread, much colder morning. temperatures low to mid 40s to start things off on sunday, then those partly cloudy skies and highs still staying below average upper 50s, but at least a few more low 60s tomorrow with that sunshine returning on
6:18 pm
sunday. now monday and tuesday we get the progression upward with those high temperatures back closer to the averages by tuesday, then very likely going above average wednesday and thursday. a chance of 80s making a comeback around santa rosa, solano county, maybe out towards the tri-valley and areas south of san jose in the upper 70s. so yet again, we got one of these midweek warm ups, high pressure building in as we head through about thursday. now friday and next weekend, we're saying stay tuned in the forecast because it looks like there might be an upper level low which could set up across california. that might bring a slight chance of a few showers. not like the soaking record rain that we had today around the bay area, but something to keep in mind for next weekend that will lead to some cooling temperatures later in the week. but you saw san francisco. we'll get in those 70s midweek and valleys east bay, north bay areas south of san jose should see at least 3 or 4 days of upper 70s and low 80s. so tuesday through friday pretty warm that we'll be watching the clouds again next weekend. but i don't think we're
