is this weekend, but there are still protesters camped out on campus. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dionne lim, new at six. a large rally took place this afternoon on the campus of uc berkeley in support of those in rafah. rafah is in the southern part of gaza and is an important border crossing. the israeli army just moved in and took control of it. that rally happened right in front of an encampment that popped up on the campus a couple of weeks ago. today marks seven months since hamas's october 7th attack on israel that set off the war. delegations from israel and hamas are resuming negotiations today on a cease fire and hostage release. as israel holds control of the rafah border crossing with egypt. families of people held hostage by hamas are demanding the release of their loved ones. >> we clearly say from this stage, if the only way to get the hostages back is by providing an israeli guarantee to end this war, then end this war. >> evacuations are underway in

eastern rafah as israel threatens a bigger ground invasion. the united nations says without new shipments of aid and fuel, hospitals in rafah could be out of commission within hours. u.s. officials say israel has agreed to reopen the flow of aid tomorrow. now, many universities are altering upcoming graduation plans amid security concerns involving recent protests and encampments. cal's graduation is set for this weekend. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley took a look at expectations on campus. >> the happy weekend the big uc berkeley commencement ceremony will take place saturday at 10:30 a.m. at california memorial stadium, where thousands of undergraduates will get their diplomas. >> they are limited to four tickets each for guests, and the usual protocol is in place as it is for football games. no backpacks, no banners or signs allowed, and a clear bag policy. there are also 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events taking place around campus over the next few days.

today, sather gate is wide open, but the tent encampment on the steps of sproul hall is still growing larger, with barricades set up to block access in places. campus police can be seen keeping an eye on the plaza while private security guards are visible as well. any plans for protests or events going into the graduation weekend? >> that all depends on the university, so we're playing it day by day. >> berkeley has long experience with commencement outs that were interrupted at times by protests dating back to the 1960s. >> the university says everything is going forward. >> as usual, we're going to be prioritizing using the ability of graduating students their friends and their families to participate in and to enjoy one of the most meaningful days in their lives. >> hotels near the campus say parents are already checking in for graduation events, and thus far, no one is inquired about security. graduating seniors say they're not worried. they're

excited. >> as far as the protest goes, i think it's a good thing for them to, you know, be preaching what they want to believe in and as far as i'm concerned, i've never had a problem with safety at uc berkeley. >> i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> pomona college's commencement is this week, and they're preparing for the possibility of protesters interrupting ceremonies. a camp went up monday morning right in front of the main stage. the southern california college was one of the first to have an encampment, and some students were arrested after entering an administration building and occupying the president's office there. >> how long are you going to stay here? >> until pomona college divests. >> so even if that means commencement this sunday, you'll be here. >> yeah. we will not rest. >> i can understand where they're coming from, but again, you know, this class didn't have a 2020 graduation. and, you know, now they might not even have a 2024 graduation. >> commencement events start on friday and conclude sunday

morning. the school says it has offered to meet with the protesters. there's now an investigation into the violence between protesters and counter-protesters that erupted a week ago on the campus of ucla . it will use some of that technology that i helped identify the january 6th rioters at the us capitol. reporter josh haskell, from our sister station in los angeles, explains. >> ucla announcing tuesday they're launching an investigation into the violence that occurred one week ago on the night of april 30th, when counter-protesters arrived at the gaza solidarity encampment and started attacking those living in royce quad. the investigation is being led by the newly created position of chief safety officer, filled by rick braziel. a detective from the lapd will help as well. in a statement, ucla chancellor gene block said in part avc, braziel and i have directed ucpd to invest whatever resources are needed to conduct a rapid and thorough investigation into the violent attack. ucpd is currently reviewing all

available footage from last tuesday night and speaking to witnesses who were present. we urge anyone who saw the violence firsthand or who has information about the attack to report it as soon as possible. >> they'll look at cell sites who hit what, when, who was with who. uh- facial recognition software certainly will be employed. uh- uh- vehicle license plate readers. >> meanwhile, on ucla's campus, there's more security than students as learning is taking place remotely this week after in-person classes resumed monday. but protesters quickly came back to campus. the encampment was cleared five days ago, but cleaning crews are still working to remove graffiti off the exterior of royce hall. >> it's almost like an eerie feeling. so like today, i was only here because i had to take a test and like seeing nobody here on like a tuesday afternoon. it's like a weird feeling, like, especially like this area is always packed with people. it's tough to. it's kind of weird, like tension. >> i was excited to go back, but

i also kind of enjoy, you know, respecting things and like letting things take their place. i love that we're an activist school and that we stand up for what's right, but, yeah, i mean, i would have loved to get my midterm's done in los angeles. >> josh haskell, abc seven news. >> and stay with us for continuing coverage of the college campus protests in the bay area and nationwide. get the latest anytime at abc seven news.com. we have an update to share about a story we brought you last week of a san francisco man who says he received not one, but two racist, hateful deliveries on his doorstep in recent weeks. neighbors tell me they are leading a rally saturday morning in alamo square to show support for terry williams. back in april, terry says he found a doll with a noose around its neck at his door, along with a piece of paper. so covered with slurs we couldn't show them on tv. this weekend. terry told us another racist package with threatening language landed on his doorstep. san francisco police say they are investigating both incidents. sky seven was over a

fire that damaged at least two buildings this afternoon in oakland. this is at the intersection of east eighth street and sixth avenue. you can see the flames that are shooting out of that apartment building on the corner. they also spread to the home next door. now, as bad as the fire looks, the oakland fire department says no one was hurt. however, 12 people inside the home were displaced. it's not clear if anyone was living inside the apartment building. it was covered in graffiti and had boarded up windows. the cause of the fire is, of course, under investigation. suspect has been booked for multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, after a dramatic and deadly crash in san jose this morning happened right in front of andrew hi hig school at the intersection of center road and east capitol expressway. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has new details on the investigation . >> on a deadly intersection in san jose. claimed another life tuesday morning. multi vehicle accident with three patients one patients unconscious, not breathing just before 730. san jose police say this red truck

was speeding westbound on capitol expressway. the driver then ran a red light at the intersection of center road, just outside andrew hill high school. >> the red vehicle collided with the bicyclist and then collided with another white truck that was traveling northbound on capital expressway. they had the green uh- the bicyclist. unfortunately sustained a major injuries and was pronounced deceased there at the scene. >> sapd says the bicyclist was an adult and he is sadly the 17th traffic related death in san jose of 2024. the driver of the white truck was also injured and the driver believed to have caused the crash is in jail after police say he attempted to leave the scene, a good samaritan stopped and held him until police arrived. he was booked into santa clara county's main jail on multiple charges. debris was spread out in a several block radius, as investigators worked to put the pieces together of what happened during this deadly collision. although the crash came just before classes started at andrew hill, a district spokesperson told us students were not involved in the accident. however, the school still felt the impacts, with investigations

shutting down surrounding streets that is in all directions on capitol and center road, and it's because the accident is pretty large considering the amount of vehicles that were hit related to this actual accident, and they're going to be closed for a significant amount of time. it was at least five hours before traffic began moving again on both sides of the busy intersection, center road and capitol expressway are identified as dangerous corridors in san jose due to the amount of lanes in the high speeds drivers use in today's deadly crash serves as a reminder in san jose. dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> a man suspected of hitting two pedestrians today in san francisco is now in custody. according to police, the man hit the first person at about 755 this morning in the tenderloin. that victim wasn't seriously hurt. officers spotted the suspect driving recklessly a short time later and started chasing him. that's when police say he hit a 14 year old girl walking near francisco middle school. >> the student was crossing from one side of the street to the other, making their way to

class, and that's when they were struck by by the vehicle. and we're trying to figure out how, but it may have been just it may have been the side view mirror of the vehicle. the girl suffered a broken shoulder and cuts on her head, but those injuries are non-life threatening. >> police say they arrested the driver along the embarcadero opposite the exploratorium shortly after ending the pursuit. coming up next, the budget concerns at san francisco unified school district. we have live team coverage to put the latest struggles into perspective and stormy daniels on the stand. it was her first time testifying in donald trump's historic trial, and the jury was taking notes. i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. gusty offshore winds and noticeably warmer weathers ahead . i'll be back with the forecast when abc

massive cuts. >> the state is warning the district will run out of money unless it makes some major changes. the school board is meeting right now to plan those next steps with school closures on the table, and we have team coverage tonight. diving deeper into this critical issue for the bay area's largest school district, let's get straight to abc seven news reporter ryan curry, who is live for us in san francisco, with the latest on the discussion happening as we speak. ryan >> yeah. dion. ama. good evening. beginning at 630, that's when the open session will begin. where they will plan to be discussing the budget. right now, the state essentially has control over their finances. a difficult situation that's drawing mixed reaction from parents and students. in san

francisco, school board members are preparing for their first meeting since the california department of education announced s.f. usd will soon run out of money. two fiscal experts, whom the state appointed a few years ago, are now authorized to suspend or reverse financial decisions made by the superintendent or the board. >> we send our kids off to school every morning, anticipating, you know, they're going to be supported, to learn, to thrive, to have everything they need. >> meredith dodson is in charge of the district's parent coalition. she fears the state's control means parents or others in the city won't have as much of a say in the district's moves. >> will the district not take parent and teacher feedback as seriously? because they can't, because the because the state is making all the decisions now. so i think that is a real fear. it's a real valid fear. >> at tuesday night's meeting, superintendent matt wayne is expected to outline what the state advisors want the district to do. s.f. usd has been struggling financially for years and faces declining enrollment and potential school closures amid talks of a strike among

school staff. in a statement, s.f. usd said the san francisco unified school district has been taking and continues to take serious corrective actions on its budget to address ongoing fiscal challenges. on friday, s.f. usd received notice from the cdc that because sf usd is still in the process of implementing its plan to resolve deficit spending, the cdc is revising the certification of sf usd's march budget report from qualified to negative. >> and we believe that the cdc has gone too far in trying to intervene. while we know the cuts are being made, cassandra curiel, the president of the teachers union, says she and the district have made a lot of progress to find room in the budget. over $30 million of expenditures could be saved in areas that are actually pretty far away from students, and it's ideal that they do that. the cdc should have seen by this point that the district is making these efforts to do that. >> one of the restrictions already in place is a hiring freeze. the district has struggled to bring on new teachers the last few years, and

curiel says halting the process is detrimental to students. >> there should be no classroom where a student starts the school year with no teacher. that's inappropriate. >> now, we did reach out to state superintendent tony thurman's office. the union wants him to intervene. we didn't hear back from his office. the union hopes that they want to continue working with the district, to continue to resolve any sort of budget issues before the state has any sort of intervention. we're live here in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. all right, ryan, thank you. >> now, as you can imagine, these money problems did not happen overnight. no years of buildup. and now it's coming to a head for sf, usd. so joining us to give us more context on the problem facing san francisco unified are lyanne melendez, who has decades of experience covering education and sf usd. yeah, i think we should start about how did we get here in the first place? >> yeah, well, there's so many factors. first of all, you had declining enrollment for years and the school district really didn't address it like they should have. right. it was business as usual without downsizing or reducing personnel, for example, which is

what they should have done now. also, this is a district which has always had extra money. but again, instead of saving for that extra for, you know, curriculum or extra programs, they they decided to spend too much money. and so that's not fiscally responsible is what i'm hearing by a lot of people. now, you also had the fiasco of the payroll, which everybody will tell you, that you that the district needed a new payroll system and they purchased one. but it was really never put to the test by other large school districts. and of course, as we all know, it failed and it cost them millions and millions of dollars. >> so is there a plan moving forward that's going to help? >> so what i'm hearing is that we should expect layoffs, hiring freezes. there will be schools that perhaps will be closed or consolidated. it's not going to be pretty. now, again, this is a superintendent that he was a leader of a school district in

the self-inflicted gunshot wound. investigators gave that update today. last week, the chp initially said he died, then hours later clarified that he was indeed alive. the 40 year old man from rohnert park is accused of firing shots at another driver, then getting into a standoff with officers that shut down i-80 in fairfield . >> today, president biden issued a no holds barred condemnation of anti-semitism. biden took aim at the recent surge of hate toward jews in america and around the world, during a ceremony this morning to remember victims of the holocaust. he specifically addressed anti-semitism on american college campuses in america. >> we respect and protect the fundamental right to free speech, to debate and disagree,

starts at 11 p.m. tonight for solano county, runs until 8 a.m. thursday for the other areas, it is 1 to 11 a.m. tomorrow. wind gusts will be up to 45 miles an hour. it's a northerly wind sustained 20 to 30, and that wind tends to dry out the atmosphere. the only good news is over the weekend we did have rain, so the fuel moistures are running higher in terms of fire danger. it's not going to be as high as it would be if we didn't have the rain. so let's go hour by hour. winds picking up tomorrow morning 25 to 31 miles an hour. they're picking up even stronger later on at noontime. 36 fairfield, 34. calistoga will keep those gusty winds going through tomorrow evening, but it's not going to be a windy one all over. the bay area certainly has been breezy, but those winds are not coming off the land. they're coming off the cool ocean water right now, gusting to 18 at half moon bay, which is obviously why you haven't been warming much. half moon bay only in the 50s today, but away from the coastline. we did see those

reena roy has the story. >> reporter the jury in donald trump's historic criminal trial laser focused on stormy daniels on the witness stand, listening closely and furiously taking notes during her testimony in the case. the adult film actress describing in detail her first ever encounter with trump back in 2006, meeting at a celebrity golf outing in california. and he invited her to dinner and up to his hotel suite. daniels said they had a two hour conversation before having sex as daniels got into intimate details about that alleged sexual encounter, trump seen repeatedly tapping his defense attorneys arm, signaling for her to object, which she did multiple times. >> this is all building up into, you know, again, forming this idea. >> look, she was there. this did happen. and thus eventually we'll talk about the money. >> prosecutors say trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, wired $130,000 to daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election, in exchange for her silence when trump repaid cohen in 2017,

prosecutors allege trump illegally characterized it as a legal expense to hide the payment from voters, later charging him with falsifying business records. trump has pleaded not guilty and has denied that encounter with daniels. >> so this was a very big day very revealing day. as you see their case is totally falling apart. >> the defense calling for a mistrial over her testimony, but the judge denying that motion during cross-examination, the defense tried to play up daniels animosity for trump, the back and forth growing hostile, the judge stepping in numerous times. defense attorneys also questioning daniels credibility, asking, you're making this up as you sit here right? insisting daniels is driven by money and is making up stories to reap profits. daniels testifying that she hated trump and wanted him to be held accountable. her testimony resumes on thursday. trump's defense says he was trying to protect his family, not his presidential campaign. but daniels told the jury he never expressed any worry about

his wife finding out. reena roy, abc news, new york justice delayed in donald trump's classified documents case a federal judge today indefinitely postponed the trial in florida, citing significant issues around classified evidence that would need to be worked out before the criminal case goes to a jury. >> trump is accused of keeping classified documents that he took with him after he left the white house in 2021. >> now to an update from the abc seven news i-team. the los angeles innocence project, which is representing scott peterson, filed a motion in court today requesting new dna testing on some evidence in the case. peterson was convicted in 2004 of killing his wife, laci, and their unborn child. earlier this year, the los angeles innocence project. motion filed today argues that new dna testing for some evidence is needed and is something that could have changed the outcome of the trial. this comes just two weeks before a final hearing on the

matter. when the judge could rule on this, tiktok and its chinese parent company bytedance, are fighting back against the us government. >> tiktok could be banned in the u.s. if bytedance doesn't sell the popular social media platform in the next 9 to 12 months, president biden signed that order last month. in the lawsuit. tiktok and bytedance say the order is illegal because it infringes on its users first amendment rights. the white house did not immediately comment on the lawsuit. >> apple just introduced its newest tech, newly updated ipads , with powerful new ai capabilities. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on what was revealed today. >> so it sounds a sleeker and faster ipad is hitting the market, according to apple's tuesday product reveal event, this is the biggest day for ipads since its introduction. in the reveal, centered around ipad pro and ipad air tablets. both devices will come in new sizes and have new appearances, but the product reveal also hinted at a lot more to come as it relates to artificial intelligence. >> the new air is also an incredibly powerful device for

overturned in truckee yesterday, spilling cans all over 8-80. the driver and passenger had minor injuries. authorities believe the driver may have gone off one side of the road, then overcorrected, causing that semi to tip over. dozens of chickens were rescued from the streets of brooklyn after they fell out of the back of a box truck yesterday morning. their crates were.

ramp to the brooklyn-queens expressway. you see it right there. the nypd says there were 15 crates that came out of the back door of that truck. it's likely the truck driver had no idea what was going on at the time. eventually, the owner came back to pick them up. the first mission of the boeing starliner could launch as early as friday. its trip to the international space station was scrubbed yesterday. nasa says it's being cautious after detecting an issue with an oxygen valve. last night was supposed to be the first mission of the boeing starliner, with two astronauts astronauts on board. nasa says the mission is crucial to determine if the boeing spacecraft is ready for routine trips to the space station and a trip to the moon next year. >> a mixed day on wall street today. stocks made some early gains, but they drifted off before the closing bell. the dow and the s&p both ended the day in positive territory, but the nasdaq fell. well disney reporting its first ever quarterly profit. that is earlier than expected. disney said it would take another six months to get to this point. the

are looking a little emptier today. taking a live look at our pier 39 camera right now, where the harbor master's office tells us there were so many sea lions hanging out there last week, the floating docks needed repairs. crews had to herd the sea lions away as they fixed those docks. the repairs are now done, but the harbor master says some of the sea lions may be a little cautious about coming back. look at what it looked like just a week ago. tons. not an inch to move around, the harbor, master told us they counted about a thousand sea lions on the docks. the most they've seen in 15

team teal got the number one pick in the nhl draft lottery. the sharks had the worst record in the league this season and last some good news. >> the first overall selection in the 2024 nhl draft belongs to the san jose sharks, and they go while the draft is going to be june 28th in vegas. >> sharks fans loving the lottery at the team watch party. the story gets even better from here because it's expected. the first pick in the draft will be macklin celebrini. you may remember that name. his father, rick, is the director of sports medicine and performance for the warriors. macklin is just a 17 year old center, so young, but he played this past season at boston university, scored 32 goals with 32 assists. the celebrini family has been in the bay area for six years, so this is going to be kind of a homecoming for macklin. >> yeah, obviously i live there. for a little bit, growing up, obviously with my dad, with the warriors, but, yeah, i mean, obviously they're a great organization. and, i've been
