for it. good evening. i'm ama daetz because of videos like that one. there are concerns about the safety of waymo's. just as the company is getting ready to send its self-driving cars down the peninsula for expanded testing. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone talked to industry experts about the future of robo taxis, experimenting on our roads. >> you're looking at viewer video showing a waymo self-driving car not only driving in the all new red bus lanes along van ness avenue in san francisco, but also stopping to make a left hand turn at post street on sunday, a move that, according to the sign, is illegal. phil koopman specializes in self-driving car safety. carnegie mellon university and has done so for 20 plus years. >> we're seeing a lot of loose ends that the technology isn't quite there. the companies are claiming it's safer, but things like driving the wrong way down the street, as long as there's no crash, they would say don't count for unsafe meaning this incident likely would not get

logged as a dangerous or concerning one since no one got hurt. >> we did reach out to waymo to see what happened, but as of late monday night, they have yet to respond. koopman has major concerns with the way testing is being done with these self-driving companies. >> well, i think there is no such thing as public road testing without a driver. either you're testing or you're done and you're deployed. >> levent erdal is chair of the computer science department at cal state east bay, who believes testing is going the way it should. >> in my opinion, as of today, it is pretty safe and it is going to get safer, in my opinion, along the way. >> erdal believes that if and when ai expands to self-learning within these cars instead of rule based, it could be a huge improvement. as for the safety of waymo and other self-driving vehicles. erdal says nothing is 100, especially not human drivers.

>> so i believe that the driverless cars autonomous cars has a future, and i believe that that future is already here. >> i experienced myself, and i believe that waymo is really, really good, really, really safe stuff. >> as for this waymo vehicle driving in the bus lane, the sfmta says the self-driving cars are not allowed in the red transit only lanes in san francisco. jr stone, abc seven news. >> new details tonight on a situation that put a neighborhood in antioch on lockdown for hours, police told neighbors around gentry town drive and putnam street to stay inside this afternoon as they search for a suspect. the u.s. marshals office tells us they helped stockton police arrest a man wanted for homicide. police gave the all clear just after five tonight and new developments from the middle east, the ap reports. israeli forces have taken control of the gaza side of the rafah border with egypt. it's a key crossing

for people to get in or out of gaza. the new attacks come after it seemed both sides agreed to a ceasefire. israeli officials say what hamas agreed to was different from what was offered by israel in recent days. israel's offer included a six week ceasefire and the release of palestinian prisoners in exchange for up to 33 hostages. >> we continue to believe that a hostage deal is in the best interests of the israeli people. it's in the best interest of the palestinian people. it would bring an immediate cease fire. it would allow, increased movement of humanitarian assistance. and so we're going to continue to work to try to reach one. >> earlier today, israel had warned 100,000 palestinians in eastern rafah to evacuate immediately. police in southern california arrested at least 100 more pro-palestinian protesters today across two different campuses. ucla couldn't even get through a full day of in-person classes without shutting down the campus closed again today after police arrested 44 protesters on suspicion of conspiracy to attempt burglary.

ucla will stay with remote instruction. the rest of the week, the university says the lapd is committing a detective to investigate the attack on that protest, almost a week ago at uc san diego, officers in riot gear raided the encampment there for the first time. 64 people were arrested, 40 of them students who will be suspended. california's newest pro-palestinian encampment is at uc davis. students there set up tents this morning and sent the university a list of demands, including divestment, from israel. uc davis chancellor shared a statement tonight saying the university is working with the protesters to avoid disruption to classes. the student protesters at san francisco state have similar demands for their counterparts across the state, and today the university president heard them out in a public forum. students at other campuses have had negotiations with the university leaders, but the protesters here say this is the first time the conversation has happened in public view. for president. lynn

mahoney told the protesters the school may consider avoiding investments in companies involved in war, but she wouldn't agree to student demands that she called the war in gaza a genocide. >> my job is actually to create the space for content neutral. that's that democratic process again. so no, as a president of a university, i don't make political statements. >> i am very optimistic about how this conversation proceeded. we are, again, very thankful for president mahoney to come out and have this conversation with us. >> the protesters say today's conversation made them hopeful, but they have no plans to pull down their encampment yet. well, another breezy night across the bay area, looking live out at the embarcadero, a taste of summer, though, just on the horizon. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is here with a look at the warm up getting started in your 24 hour accuweather forecast. hi, spencer. hey umma, it is indeed getting started. >> in fact, tomorrow continues our warming trend. sunny skies all day in the early morning

hours 7:00 51 degrees around the bay, nearly 50 inland and at the coast. but as we get to the noon hour, it'll be warming up mid 60s from the bay to inland only mid 50s on the coast. 4:00 in the afternoon, rising temperatures mid 70s inland about 7071 around the bay. only upper 50s on the coast and at 7 p.m. uh- all an hour and a half before sunset. we'll have 70 degrees inland, upper 60s on the around the bay shoreline and mid 50s at the coast. this is just the beginning of a much warmer pattern that we will see later in the week. and i'll have all that for you a little bit later. ama all right, we'll check back. >> thank you. spencer, we are passionate about building a better bay area here on abc seven news at 11, and that means pointing out progress when we see it. tonight we're bringing you two breakthroughs for san francisco on big issues facing the city. abc seven news reporter tim johns has the first one looking at a boost for small businesses. >> and it's citing week in san francisco kicking off with a burst of energy monday night. hundreds coming out to pier 70

to launch the city's small business week. hundreds of businesses are partaking, doing their own special things special codes, offerings, bars, food, etc. that includes brian madden, whose art studio was one of the places highlighted at the event. >> i really feel like this place is built on small businesses, and it feels great to be a part of that. >> the theme of this year's small business week is makers or establishments that actually create their goods or services here in the city, madden says. while san francisco is known primarily for its tech sector, its small business scene is thriving. he showed off some of his studio's recent work, including trophies created for professional football players. >> yeah! sports reached out and were like, hey, could you do that? similar type of thing? but for our nfl players. and so i got to make awards for people like tom brady, patrick mahomes, christian mccaffrey. >> other businesses say just being in san francisco is a boon for them. jordan schultz runs sf game development, which helps video game designers get their game started. he says the concentration of highly innovative and creative people here is something that can't be found. many other places.

>> as the developers that are working at these big tech companies on the side, right, they're working on building their passion projects and their video games, and they're raising funding here. >> and while she might not be breakdancer ing mayor london breed says she's working with elected leaders to make sure the city does its part to help trying to create more small businesses and investments in san francisco and we have a first year free program where we waive all city fees for anyone opening a brick and mortar business. >> we've seen so many makers finally get an opportunity to open a storefront in san francisco. >> in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> our other breakthrough tonight, while san francisco waits for the supreme court to determine if it can clear homeless encampments, the city is finding other ways to remove tents. the latest street count, taken last week, found 360 tents and structures across the city. that's a 41% decrease from last july, when there were more than 600 tents in encampments. san francisco has moved 460 people who were living in encampments into shelters. so far this year.

>> i'm very encouraged by what this means for our city and looking forward to more momentum around getting people off the streets and getting them housed, but more importantly, not allowing those who refuse service to continue to take over the streets of san francisco. >> the survey also found there were no encampments, with ten or more tents and only nine with five or more tents. the bay area sports hall of fame has some new faces. they inducted the 2024 class tonight at the hyatt regency in san francisco. abc seven news sports anchor chris alvarez was at tonight's ceremony and spoke with the five new inductees. >> hi. i'm a distinct class tonight spanning a wide range of sports, and there was a surprise celebration for one of the greatest in bay area sports history, the one and only willie mays. happy birthday, dear willie b. >> happy birthday to you. happy birthday. >> and that was pretty cool. a

peace. officers from around the state paid their respects today to eight colleagues who each gave their life in the line of duty. those officers now have their name added to a memorial monument at the state capitol. hundreds took part in the ceremony in sacramento for a law enforcement caravan made its way from the chp academy to the capitol mall. a roll call of the honorees was read, followed by a dove release and 21 gun salute. among the newest officers added to the memorial, oakland police officer twan lay, officer lay was working undercover when he was fatally shot while responding to a burglary call at a marijuana business back in december. for years now, one family's elaborate displays have been a halloween tradition for people in the south bay and for us here at abc seven, it was all about raising the spirits of neighbors and of the family's terminally ill son, christopher, the jimenez family tells us after a life full of love, christopher has died. abc seven

news reporter lauren martinez spoke with his family tonight about chris's legacy of joy. >> when you think of a mother's love, a haunted and creepy halloween display may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it was for shelley jimenez and her son, chris. >> it was just magical. he he he his face just lit up every single time we came outside. >> chris was born premature and battled major health issues his entire life. >> he had cerebral palsy on his entire left side, and, his lungs were, damaged because he was on a ventilator for almost a year. >> when chris was 15, doctors told his parents, shelley and saul, he wouldn't live to 18. i just learned you just never, ever give up. >> and, i didn't. >> on friday, chris passed away at the age of 29 years old. >> he actually molded my husband and i into the people we are

today. >> in 2019, we introduced you to the jimenez family. chris's vision was deteriorating, and at the time he became more housebound, so his mom wanted to bring joy to him. by transforming their front yard in san jose into an elaborate halloween display. i asked if that tradition would continue after, chris passed away. >> i would say no, but need to keep his legacy going, and i need to, do it for my community. >> neighbors say that annual display has brought joy and happiness to so many others. >> you don't see the type of, neighborly love and care that goes into the community, these days. but they give that and some of the moms on the street say it's hard to beat the level of compassion shelley has shown

for her family and for the community. >> the greatest display of a mother's love is just the outpouring. >> neighbors have been dropping off flowers, gift cards and handmade cards for chris. there won't be a day that goes by that i will not talk about him in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> four boaters are safe tonight thanks to a heroic rescue effort in tomales bay, the sonoma county sheriff's office shared this video of its tactical flight officer swooping in to save the group, which was stranded on an overturned boat. two people were sitting on the hull, two others were clinging to the boat. one by one, that tactical officer pulled them all to safety. the launch of boeing's starliner was scrubbed just two hours before takeoff today. nasa officials say they found a stuck valve on the atlas five rocket. the valve is not from boeing, but a different aerospace manufacturer. the starliner is a brand new spacecraft that's expected to compete with spacex. two

flow for days now. that continues, but the wind speeds are not quite so brisk as they were earlier this evening. 20 mile per hour gusts right now at novato, most other locations have surfaced speeds under 20mph, and the warm up continues. it's about 3 to 5 degrees warmer right now across most of the region than at this time last night. more specifically, as we look down onto the bay from mount tam, 53 degrees here in the city. in fact, we have mid 50s also at oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city, and 52 degrees at half moon bay. nice clear view from emeryville. looking back toward san francisco and the bay bridge. 46 degrees in petaluma. but mid 40 mid 50s rather 46 petaluma. mid 50s elsewhere at santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. and as we look out over the city from sutro tower, let's check out our forecast headlines. the warm weather will continue throughout this week. expect summer like heat in fact, towards the end of the week, that will be the peak of the heating. thursday friday and saturday. and by week's end, we expect high temperatures in our inland communities to reach or exceed 90 degrees. that's a

lot like overnight, relatively mild compared to some of the recent nights. we'll have lows mainly in the mid to upper 40s, where we had low 40s and some upper 30s over the weekend. excuse me, losing my voice. then tomorrow, under sunny skies, breezy conditions at the coast, look for highs in the upper 50s near the coast. inland areas. inland areas in the east bay. mid 70s mid 70s in the inland north bay as well. right around the bay shoreline. we'll see highs up to about 70 degrees. now as we look at the maximum temperature trend going into the late part of the week, inland highs will be in the upper 80s to about 90 by thursday. friday look for some low 90s and on saturday a similar range of low 90s in our inland areas and mid 80s around the bay shoreline. that is quite a warm up. that's what we've all been well, most of us have been looking forward to. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. gradual warming through the next couple of days into thursday, then friday and saturday we get those really summer-like uh- temperatures climbing up to about 90 degrees inland or even
